Image to Dissimilar hardware

Thread needs solution

I have an image from an older system that crashed. I had to replace the pc with a new one. I want to image the hard drive of the new pc to match the old one, but run the new hardware. Do I have to create some sort of driver backup file from the new pc before I do the recovery? What steps do I need to take to do this successfully? I have Acronis True Image 2013 with the Plus Pack. The operating system of the old and new pc is Windows XP.

Thanks

Did/do both PCs have the same version of Windows XP?

If so, you could perform a Universal Restore. You would have to assemble drivers for the new hardware, as these will be required during restore, since the backup would contain drivers for your old hardware. Some drivers can wait until the new system is booted, such as graphics - you'd just have to work with the crummy-looking low-res display from default drivers until then. But, chipset driver would be required during restore.

Another alternative if you don't mind reinstalling your apps on the new PC is to simply restore the data files from the backup after the new system is up and running. As XP benefits from a clean install periodically, the system might end up better than what you'd get by recovering the old system.
