Image was good, System locked up during a restore, now corrupted.
Using True Image build 8018
Removed a hard drive from a computer and connected it to our data transfer computer and created an image of the hard drive. Used Windows Explorer to verify that the image was browseable, and it was. We've used this procedure hundreds of times.
The hard drive was then formatted and reinstalled with Windows in its original computer. The hard drive was then reconnected to the data transfer computer, the backup image mounted, and a file-by-file copy of important data was begun back to the original hard drive.
The data transfer computer locked up halfway through the copy process and had to be rebooted. Now the archive file is corrupt. Browsing the file with explorer displays nothing but an empty drive (though the file size of the archive still says 16gb) Mounting the drive, or attempting to use True Image to restore the files to a different folder on the desktop both fail. We next attempted to run a validation on the archive and the result is an error about a corrupted archive.
We are running a chkdsk now, to see if tht does anything, since the archive file was open when the system was rebooted. We are looking for other options. The data is pretty critical, and now the only existing copy of it is in the corrupted archive.

Have you tried booting from the recovery CD? You won't be able to mount or explore but it might allow you to recover.
It is posible that although the file size is shown as 16GB, it doesn't actualy exist if whatever caused the data transfer computer to freeze managed to damage the contents of either the FAT32 table or MFT (if NTFS).
The other remote possibility is that the permissions security descriptor has changed - this might happen if you've re-installed the OS on the data transfer computer, however this normally happens if you restore an image with SSID's to a different installation of Windows. This can be easily solved.
Image corruption sounds more likey. One way to check this would be to download the trial version of Disk Director 10 or something similar and see if there really is anything still on the drive.

Well the ChkDsk /F would have hopefully taken care of any damage to the file system caused by the lockup and reboot, but that didn't help.
I'm not sure that the recovery cd would help in this case. We're not trying to restore the complete image, only save critical documents from it. The Windows XP installation was so badly infected as to be pretty much unuseable, which is the reason that the drive was imaged prior to formatting it. Doing a full restore from the cd would just restore the infection, which is not helpful.
The OS on the data transfer system hasn't changed, and we hadn't yet done a restore, so the scenario with the security descriptor can't be the problem.
I guess the main question is whether or not Acronis has any sort of utility available that will recover data from a corrupt archive file that is otherwise inaccessible.

It's still a good idea to try the TI CD as it also allows the restoration of files and folders.
What version of TI are you using? I'm not finding build 8,018 in my list. Is it a TI 11 build?
Have you tried the latest build for your version of TI?
When you mounted the image file, was it in read-only mode or read-write mode? If read-write, have you tried separating the added Incremental file from the base file?
When you try to validate the image, does it report as corrupt immediately or does it progress for a while and then show the error?
