Imaging Windows and Linux Partitions
Hello all,
Can anyone answer this question? What will happen if i try to image a disk that has both NTFS and Ext4 partitions on it .... Would Acronis 2010 v7046 image the "Windows" partition as normal... Then do a sector by sector image of the "Linux" partitions? Thanks in advance ...Regards Fred

I find it very frustrating that TI will not image Linux partitions. I run a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Mandriva Linux. It took me a long time and a lot of trial and error to get it properly installed and working, and it would be nice if I could backup those partitions.
Thanks,
William

There are freeware products that will image Linux partitions, but I'm not sure if they support ext4 yet or not. A quick search should find several of them, I believe Clonezilla supports ext4. FWIW, I used Acronis to image an ext3 linux partition with GRUB in the PBR and when I restored it found that Acronis had decided to zero out the GRUB sector (as opposed to just doing nothing at all) so my boot manager could no longer find GRUB. I had another copy of that partition from one of the free tools, and it restored it perfectly, so Acronis isn't all that great for linux applications anyway. I really like using Acronis tools (the older versions in my case), and appreciate them supporting this forum, but since they don't support your application I don't feel guilty about using their forum to recommend another product to solve your problem.
Edit: I had been meaning to do a test restore anyway, so I used Clonezilla to restore an ext4 partition of Ubuntu Lucid (10.04) and it worked perfectly. I'm not sure if Clonezilla is based on partimage under the hood or not, there was some mention of it that I recall reading before, but I'm not sure. The partimage website didn't seem to mention ext4 capability the last time I looked, but it may have been recently added.

Thanks for the info. I'll probably do the backup from within Mandriva, so I'll find a way to do it that way.

this is the exact thing i did a search for yesterday and replied to a thread was a little off target.
you mean acronis used to be capable of doing this, but doesn't anymore? that really stinks as i just created a dual boot with zenwalk 6.4 and windows 7 on several machines.
will acronis still at least be capable of backing up the windows partitons correctly?
not on computer that i can check what version i have installed, but pretty sure it's the same as op's.
thank you
