Incredibly slow restore time

Thread needs solution

I have TIH 2011 6857.
I have Windows 7 Professional x64.
I have an SSD drive. TRIM is enabled.
I have a HDD drive.
I back up my SSD to my HDD using the Rescue CD (<25GB).
I back up my SSD to HDD using TIH 2011 using the disk option.
Either one takes 8 minutes.
I restore either image from the HDD using the Rescue CD.
Either one takes 6+ hours.

Why?

This is driving me nuts.
I can't believe the performance is this slow.
It is affecting my ability to get things done.
Should I get a new SSD?
Should I get a new backup program?
What information can I provide?

Thanks.

Stephen,

There is definitely some issue and this behavior is not normal. I have seen ATI 2011 switching to a slow restore mode (sector by sector) in some circumstances.
Are you restoring the entire SSD disk, or only one partition?

I am restoring the entire SSD disk.
I have a Western Digital SSD - I don't know if I need special drivers or not. I can't find any on the WD site.
When I backup my HDD and restore to an HDD - no problem.

No, you don't need special drivers. Is your write speed on the SSD what you expect in general?

I've performed a couple of tests on the drive. No issues. It runs just fine and boots up very quickly.

Stephen,

What tests did you run? What is your BIOS setting for the SSD? AHCI?

My BIOS setting for the Storage Controller is IDE.
I ran AS SSD Benchmark. See attached.
I noticed something I did not see before.
I now have a message, in red, that save 417690 K Bad
I think that means I am not set up correctly on 4K boundaries.

If that be the case, what do I need to do.
Re-install Windows and make sure it formats the drive correctly?

I ran MSINFO32 to get the partition starting offsets.
Disk 0 partition 0 the offset is 1,048,576
For disk 0 partition 1 the offset is 427,714,560.

Partition 0 is divisible by 4096
Partition 1 is not divisible by 4096.
I thought only partition 0 had to be divisible by 4096.

Am I wrong?

Thanks.

Can you switch your SSD to AHCI in the BIOS?

Yes, both partitions need to be aligned.

To align it you need, first a backup to restore, second your Windows installation DVD: you boot on it, choose install > repair > Command Prompt.
- we are going to completely erase the disk. Type DISKPART http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300415
- LIST DISK
- SELECT DISK X where X is the number for your SSD, Probably 0
- CLEAN (the entire disk is erase)
- CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=[the exact size of your first partition in *MB*] OFFSET=1,048,576
- CREATE PARTITION
- LIST PARTITION YOu now have 2 partitions. The second one should be aligned
- SELECT PARTITION 0 (the first partition)
- FORMAT LABEL = <"System Reserved">
- SELECT PARTITION 1 (the second partition)
- FORMAT LABEL = <"System">
- ASSIGN LETTER=C
- EXIT

Now reboot on your Acronis CD
Restore the system reserved partition alone to the new corresponding partition on your disk. Make the new destination primary, active
Restore the C:\ partition to the new corresponding partition. Remember the drive letters are not the same as in windows. Look at the labels!
Restore finally the MBR+track0, + disk signature.

Boot your computer. Verify alignment: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/other/157

OK - it took me awhile but I got it resolved. Everything is aligned as it should be. Thank you very much.
