Incremental Backup in ATI 2011 does not function properly
Why I use the incremental backup in ATI 2011 because I don't want to take long time to backup my data everyday.
I install the ATI 2011 Traditional Chinese version on my Traditional Chinese Windows XP Prof with SP3.
The first time I backup an external USB hard drive contain around 9GB data (250GB capacity), ATI made a full backup on QNAP NAS through UNC \\ip address\shared folder connection. There were 2 corrupted files on the hard drive and ATI prompted me to select action during the backup. I was disappointed to this prompt because I did check the error handling as silent mode which mean there should no error message pop up if error occurred.
I did the chkdsk on the hard drive and fix the corrupted files and removed them. I did the backup again after the fix. ATI made almost the full backup and it took almost the same time of completion. The backup .tib files' size were almost the same. I read through this forum and most advanced user recommended to turn off the defragment if Win 7. Firstly, I didn't do the defragment on this external USB hard drive and mine is XP Pro, or the chkdsk might cause the similar action as defragment, okey, I don't understand the backup methodology of ATI, for partition backup, I fully understand it is quite difficult to compare the whole disk after defragment but for files/folders backup, it should only compare the modificiation time of files and not consider where the physical location of the files are stored on drive.
(Please refer to the screen captured attached in this post)
I made the 2nd time incremental backup after modification on few files (less then 5 files), the size of the .tib files were also as similiar as a full backup.
I made the 3rd time incremental backup without any change on any files on the hard drive, unfortunately, the size of .tib files were as similiar as a full backup.
What is the purpose of incremental backup? In such case, there is no difference compare to a full backup.
I heard the ATI 2010 could do the incremental properly, why the newer version is worse than the previous one?
Any one can help?
Kelvin

Kelvin,
It is possible your NAS is timing out which might cause the corrupt files problem.
When you set up your task, did you select only the incremental option? If so this should have made 1 x complete full image and then the next time the task was run, an incremental.
Are you making complete disk, partition or files and folders images?
Could you post some shots of how you've set up your task?

Dear Colin,
Thanks for your update. As my platform is Traiditional Chinese, so you may not able to understand what the message said.
There is no problem to the timing issue from the NAS because I know the 2 files in the external USB hard drive are corrupted, I can't copy them using Windows Explorer also. Any way, the files are now fixed and removed.
I do the same setting to the two backup tasks. Just the problem one is the source from external USB hard drive but the normal one is from internal hard disk.
Both backkup are files/folders image but not partitions.
Best regards,
Kelvin

It seems no one can help to solve this probelm. Do any one know whether ATI 2011 can do incremental backup for external drive?

Kelvin,
It should be able to.
Do you have access to an external USB drive to see if you still have the same problem?
Could you also check to see if you have the same problem if you make a complete disk or partition image.
Are you still within 30 days of purchase of 2011? If you are, you can still raise a support ticket directly with Acronis.

Dear Colin,
What do you want me to test? I tried to have same setting on two backup, one is from internal hard drive and another one is from external USB hard drive. The internal hard drive has no problem to make incremental backup but the external one cannot do the same. Everytime it make the backup is full backup.

Hi I realize this is an old post but the fix for this is infact a BUG in acronis 2011.
Simple create a VERSION CHAIN BACKUP, and have it do 1 full. Swap it to incremental on custom, it will do another FULL. All backups after that will be INCREMENTAL, so delete the first FULL BACKUP from the VERSION CHAIN.
Annoying, but it fixes it.
