Information requested about transfering programs & other data after upgrading to Windows 7
Recently I installed Acronis True Image Home 2010 on my HP desktop computer. I am new to this backup software and would like to use its backup features to reinstall programs and data after I upgrade my PC from Vista to Windows 7 using the 'clean install' method instead of the in place upgrade. For backup I use an USB hard drive (500GB) and make a full image backup once a month followed by an incremental backup once a week for three consecutive weeks. After the third incremental backup I repeat this cycle again. I would appreciate if some of you can give me some tips as to what I should save prior to the upgrade and how to use this saved data to transfer back to my HP desktop after windows 7 is installed.

I have purchased a new computer that will have a 500 GB hard disk and Windows 7 premium home edition. I have my entire hard drive from my current computer (75 GB hard drive running Windows XP Professional) backed up (via Acronis True Image Home) to a Seagate 250 GB external hard drive. How best can I transfer all my data and programs to the new computer without transfering any of the Windows XP operating system?
Thank you!
Michael

Hello Michael!
Welcome to Acronis Forum and thank you for your comment! I will be glad to help.
As was already mentioned by Oleg, there is no way to restore applications from XP to Windows 7 - they will not run due to OS architecture differences. But you can definitely recover the data from the backup. Also please note that in case you are going to recover onto the second machine you will need 1 additional license: according to the Acronis License Policy you will need one license for one computer your are going to backup or restore.
I would suggest you to recover only files and folders. You can find step-by-step instructions in the User's Guide, p. 92, Chapter 10.4.2. Recovering files and folders from image archives.
Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Hi Yana
Just to be clear- I wish to upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional and it is likely that I will need to do a clean install.
1) Are you saying a clean install requires all programmes to be reinstalled manually no matter what?
2) Can I do this using Acronis True Image Home 2010 so that I do not have to reinstall all the programmes?
3) If so what should I leave out of the back up so that I do not reinstall Vista when restoreing my backed up files etc?
4) Is there another way?!
Regards
Michael
