inspiron 1501 won't recognize USB Drive

Hi, I have a Dell inspiron 1501 that I was trying to clone the drive to a larger one. The Inspiron would not recognize the USB hard drive, so I cloned the original disk to a new disk using another machine. Is this allowable?
Now I cannot get the new drive to boot, it just cycles through the BIOS over and over..
When I look at the cloned drive on another PC, everything is there. What gives?
It's Vista Home Basic.
