Installation woes fixed

Thread needs solution

Have just installed True Image Home 2012. First time it couldn't find libraries or show any partitions. Uninstalled via control panel and reinstalled with av and firewall off. This time gave C++ library errors and shut down. Then downloaded Acronis removal tool, ran it, rebooted (AV and firewall off), reinstalled and now all fine.

Aaaah Paul, you made the fatal mistake (like most of us) of thinking all you needed to do was press the install button.... that would be too easy for Acronis software ;-) ATI doesn't like to be installed on a Monday or indeed any day ending in "Y" and you're best advised to uninstall any operating system first, then it'll be much more like the environment that Acronis tested the software on..... :-)

Good luck - all versions since ATI Home 2010 are paid for beta software - you only have to read the first few posts on any given day to see this.

It's tru on any software specific forum that the posts are about probs -- people without probs tend to avoid the forums, except those several of us that hang around just to try to help.

ATI generally should be installed without an existing version present although most of the time that's not an issue.

As I mentioned in a previous post, Nero does NOT install over an older version.

Nero's installation routine, extracts the serial number if it is an update, removes the old version, installs the new version and applies the serial number. Nero uses messages in popup windows to inform the customer what is happening.

If Acronis wants the old version removed, Acronis, can accomplish this with one or two lines of code, 5 minutes of programming time, and save us their customers time, and their support staff time and money.

Many modern programs can be over written successfully.

The old K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle is still around and still valid.

Let me make some clear suggestions:
1. If Acronis needs the old version removed, Acronis should remove it.
2. If the Acronis installation routine is having problems replacing "in use files" install the complete program during the boot process.
3. If previous backups are not compatible with previous versions, develop a conversion routine to convert the old backups. Since most backup schemes contain all the files specified by the customer, it is only the wrapper that is different. Gererate a new wrapper with information from the old wrapper, and merge the contents (files) with the new wrapper.
4. If some programs don't play nicely with Acronis software, do a search for programs on the computer, suggest they be uninstalled first. The latest "don't play nicely list" could be downloaded and run by the installer, so the latest information is always used.

Acronis can make our lives and that of your staff a whole lot simpler, but Acronis needs a target goal. My suggestion for a target goal:

Installation GUARANTEED, with one push of a button.
Hastle free backups, GUARANTEED, with only 5 minutes of setup time..

ironic that you should bring up nero as an example of a nice installer. I had so much trouble with it i quit using it two versions ago. Nero is kinda well kniwn for install/uninstall/update issues.

My only comment here is that since ATI2010 thru ATI2012 installation has been a breeze. I installed each only over the previous version and there was no problem at all.

This Acronis 2012 software sucks. Will not install on a clean system. I've asked for a refund & due to the lack of suport will never buy another product from them ever again.
