Installing (not even running) Acronis True Image Home 2009 on an XP machine causes it to be invisible to network computers

Thread needs solution

Problem: just installing (not even running) Acronis True Image Home 2009 on an XP machine causes it to be invisible to all other computers on the same network.
Explanation:
Computer # 1 = Windows XP Home Edition SP 3 Intel Core 2 CPU @ 2.13 Ghz 2GB Ram

Computer # 2 = Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP 2 Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.5GHz 3GB Ram & True Image installed connected to a WRT54G2 Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router.

Computer # 3 = Windows XP Home Edition SP 3 Toshiba Satellite Intel Celeron @1.5 Ghz .99GB Ram

Installed True Image on Computer # 1
Restarted computer # 1(did not run True Image)
Computer # 1 can see & communicate with Computer # 2 & Computer # 3. However Computer # 2 & Computer # 3 cannot see or communicate with computer # 1 with True Image installed.

Removed the following startup items from HKLM run and restarted machine. The problem still exists.
"TrueImageMonitor.exe"
"AcronisTimounterMonitor"
"Acronis Scheduler2 Service"

Uninstalled True Image and all machines communicate okay.

Installed True Image on Computer # 3 , did not restart, communication was normal.
Restarted Computer # 3, now #3 can see #1 & #2 but #1 & # 2 cannot see # 3.
Uninstalled True Image and all machines communicate okay.

I have been having the same problem.  In my case the IRPStackSize did not already exist so I created one, using a value of 18.  This value did not work for me so I am wanting to change it.   However, when I look at the Value Data box it is showing "Hexadecimal" as being chosen.  Should I change this to "Decimal" each time before I change the value?

Yes, change it to decimal.

Well, I really thought this fix would solve my problem, but it hasn't.   I created the IRPStackSize, using a starting value of 18, but this did not work.  So, according to the Microsoft KB article, http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;177078, I could increase the Value by 3.  I increased it in values of three all the way up to 48, and then to 50.  50 is supposedly the maximum value that this value may be set to.   So, once again I invested a lot of time trying another possibility, and still don't have a clue what the problem is.

I really thought this was going to work since Robert Winter had the same symptons that I have.   Another poster had the very similar problems, but he never reported if this cure helped him.  See http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=1504561.  This seems to be a build 9796 problem.  If anyone has anything else I should try, please let me know and I will give it a try.

Davidj,

I'm very surprised that change didn't work.  Make certain that IRPStackSize is spelled correctly and note that it is case-sensitive.  This is not a build 9796 problem.  Here's another link:

Hello all,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/ | Acronis True Image]]

Davidj,

Please check again that you have done everything correctly, increasing the IRPStackSize value should solve the problem.

Thank you.

Oleg, thanks for your input.

Please look at the attachment in post #3 above.

This is a screen print of my registry editor.  Notice at the bottom of the screen print the path is shown.  Do you see any errors there?    Also, there is an arrow pointing to the Name (IRPStackSize), Type (REG_DWORD) and Data (0X00000012(18).  Do you see any errors with any of this.

If you look at Forum number 3124, you will see more information on my setup, and what I have tried with the IRPStackSize.

David

Hello all,

Davidj, the information on screenshot you posted appears to be fine, except one thing: set Decimal value after you put in value for parameter.

Also, could you please clarify your operating system?

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Alexander,

Please go to http://www.acronis.com/forum/3124 and look at post #13.  This post should clarify my operating system.

Thank you,

David

With the help of labrador999 (see http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=1533909 post #13) I think I have found an answer to my problem of not being able to access the internet when I install Acronis True Image Home 2009, build 9796, in conjunction with ESET version
4.0.437.0 For your reference I am using Microsoft Vista Ultimate, SP2 on an Intel Quad Processor, 4 GB ram and Explorer 8. For a more complete description of my system look at Post #13 in http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3124 . Also, I am using an Actiontec M142WR modem and router combination which was provided by my ISP, Verizon FIOS. Two other locations that relate to this may be found at http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=249919 and
http://forum.acronis.com/forum/3032 .

In relation to a somewhat similar problem ESET stated, in part, “Certain modems and routers can cause conflicts with your updated ESET Smart Security Personal firewall.” This was said in ESET KB SOLN2207, in relation to a slightly different problem about Slow or no Internet connection (4.0). So it may have something to do with the modem I am using.

It would be interesting to know what others, who have this problem, or never had this problem, are using in relation to modems and routers.

This morning, after disconnecting my FIOS cable connection, I PERMANENTLY disabled the Personal firewall in ESET (see ESET KB SOLN2189) and I temporarily disabled my Antivirus and antispyware protection (see ESET KB SOLN548). Then I reinstalled Acronis True Image Home 2009, build 9796. One word of caution, if you permanently disable. or enable, the firewall, be sure to reboot your computer to make sure the action is complete.

After I installed build 9796 in ATI 2009, and reconnected my cable connection,
I then tried to access the internet and I could make my regular connections. Then I enabled the Antivirus and antispyware protection, and everything still appeared to be working properly. Then I enabled the ESET Personal Firewall and tried to access the internet and I had the same problem I had in the past; Internet Explorer 8 could not access the internet.

Next, I again PERMANENTLY disabled the Personal firewall in ESET. This allowed me to again access the internet. I still wanted some kind of firewall for my protection, so I turned on the Windows Firewall that is built into Windows Vista. Using the Windows Firewall worked for me and did not cause a loss of internet connectivity. (See ESET KB SOLN391). I see this as a temporary solution and hope ESET has a solution that will allow me to use their Personal firewall.

Now I need to see if ATI Home 2009, build 9796, is going to work with my system.

I am going to send a copy of this to Acronis support and ESET support. It is my hope that these two companies will not try and blame each other for the problem, but will work together to solve this problem.

Here is what Acronis Support had to say. I think they missed my point, you shouldn't have to create a "work around".

I am glad to know that you have found the solution to your network issue. Thank you very much for the update. It will be of great help in resolving network issues of customers using ESET security.

Please check whether ATI 2009, build 9796, works properly now with your system.

If the backup files change its dates while restoring, you can follow the steps provided in the following link:

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I will leave your case open until you permit me to close it. I look forward to your response.

Hallo,

please let me know what is going on concerning the problem ATI 2009.9796 and Eset 4.0.467 in combination with Vista SP2.

The temporary solution of deactivating the firewall in Eset 4.0.467 cannot be the final one because I have paid for a firewall that I cannot use now. Or the other solution is to uninstall ATI. That isn't an option I want to do.

So I have paid money for both products and cannot use both together.

Eset doesn't change anything in their software, because they say their software was the first one. Problems have come with ATI 9796.

And Acronis don't tell me now that there is a new version (ATI 2010). For this new version I have pay again. I don't want to spend money for solving this bug. I want to use ATI 2009 what I have paid for.

So come on Acronis and Eset. You are the only who can solve the problem. Please talk together and present a solution.
