Then why I am here?

  • Desktop PC
  • Source: Disk 0, internal SATA - Win10 installed.
  • Target: Disk 1, internal SATA - Crucial SDD (new)

Installed Acronis True Image 2014 OEM onto Disk 0 (It came with the SSD) and ran it. Used the default options and cloned Disk 0 to Disk 1. System powered off after the process completed.

Left Disk 0 installed, went into the BIOS and changed the boot order to Disk 1 as the primary – tries to boot into the OS but stalls.

Could it be any easier?

Michael. You must disconnect disk 0 before rebooting otherwise your machine will not boot correctly. You may wish to read [IMPORTANT] CLONING - How NOT to do this!!! | Acronis Forum . It is never quite as easy as the drive mfg says it is. Repeat the clone by booting from the rescue media. and disconnect Disk 0 before rebooting your machine. Windows becomes confused when it sees two identical disks with OS on them. You may have to boot from your Windows USB drive or Cd and select the to repair windows to get this to work if re-cloning does not solve your problem

Tried again -- I picked, use the default cloning options [no exclusions because it doesn't work for me if I do]. So, I started the cloning process with the defaults and Acronis restarted my computer and booted the PC into a shell -- cloned the drive then powered off the computer just like it said it would. Great so far.  I disconnected the original drive and turned on the computer. Crucial has a program that verified the SSD firmware as current.

It seemingly runs okay, but it’s not okay. In a few minutes or a few hours programs hang, even IE. Worse and maybe the root issue is that the OS hangs then gives a “…has stopped responding” error.  If I boot from the original drive then access the cloned drive, it works fine. 

I'm not sure where to best look next.

Michael, I would suggest launching Task Manager and look at the performance tab. Then open the resource monitor at the bottom of that tab. This may give you an idea what is causing the issues. TI does not support TI 2014 on Windows 10. You would need to upgrade to TI 2018 to  be current. My personal preference is to do a full disk backup and a restore when switching drives. More reliable than cloning.

A little bit of irony and many Google searches later I found a thread that talked about how uninstalling Acronis solves the exact symptom my PC was having. ...which it did.  No lockups all weekend.

I don't know if this fix is related only to crucial MX300 owners, but it's probably something Acronis should be aware of. That's assuming they read these forums because this problem is systemic with that line of SSDs.

Michael. TI 2014 OEM is supported by the manufacturer https://kb.acronis.com/content/2201. Its unlikely to be resolved by TI. In addition TI 2014 is not supported on windows 10. Did you reinstall TI to verify if the problem comes back? Did you contact Crucial? You are probably eligible for an upgrade to TI 2018. You have to contact support to find out. No, I didn't reinstall TI. It works and I'm happy. There are numerous people out there with the same issue, same fix. I don't feel a need to replow that ground. In hindsight, I probably should have posted first in the Micron Technology forums and not here. Of the posts I read there -- none of them were offered an upgrade or were mentioned about supported versions of TI.

It appears that the Crucial BX300 is replacing the Crucial MX300.  Curious if it's being shipped with True Image 2014 OEM or something that works on Windows 10.  If you haven't -- someone really ought to look into that. These problems repeat (like the post next to mine) -- you point people to articles rather than address the elephant in the room.

Michael, re your comment that 'someone really ought to look into that' in respect of what Crucial ships with their hardware products.  Sorry, but this is a User Forum and it is down to Crucial to know what they should package with their products.  As Thomas said previously, these are OEM products designated to be supported by the third-party vendors who supply them - they are not supported directly by Acronis.

With regard to installing ATI 2014 (OEM or otherwise) on Windows 10, then this is documented (by Acronis) in KB 56196: Windows 10 support in Acronis products where it states:

Older versions of Acronis products 
Support of Windows 10 will not be implemented into older versions of Acronis products (e.g. Acronis True Image 2014 or older, Acronis Backup & Recovery 11 or older, Acronis Snap Deploy 4 or older), as Acronis development team works on the current versions only. Stable functioning of older products on Windows 10 is not guaranteed.

As users of these products ourselves, we are all happy to try to help other users who hit problems and who come to these forums for assistance, but we have no influence over either Acronis or any other companies who provide their products.
