Internal Hard Drive is running out of free space

Hi everyone.

I'm using Acronis True Image 2015 (Full Version) to create a whole pc image on my external hd.
My problem is with the internal hd, it is running out of free space every time there is a disconnection between the Acronis to the external hd.
Examples:
1) I had 10.7gb free space on my internal hd and True Image 2015 worked well. Two days, I found the software stoped saving my backup on the external hard drive and my internal hard drive free space was 8.3gb. Once I opened the software, my internal hd goes back to 10.5gb.
2) The same thing happend to me with True Image 2014 (30 days Trail Version). I used the same type of external hd backup and didn't payed for the full version. After 30 days the backup stoped and since that moment my internal hd start to run out of free space(10gb--->200mb in 10 months). Once I uninstalled the software my internal hd free space jump back to 10gb.

Is Acronis temporary saving my backup on the internal hd until connection is established with the external hd?
Or there is another problem with True Image and Win XP?

I know this doesn't directly answer your question...
but it does allow you to determine with more certainty what is taking up your HDD space
