Issue With Image on Laptop
I was able to successfully image a new UEFI/GPT laptop with Legacy/MBR image using Acronis True Image 2014 Premium Universal Restore. I successfully transferred the Acronis True Image license to the new laptop. All the programs and applications were running fine. Now, three months later, the laptop is popping up an error message regarding counterfeit software and there is a message in the lower right corner stating that Windows 7 build 7601 is not genuine.
After checking date/time and other items that would cause this to happen, and before phoning Microsoft, I researched further and found this in the forums, "Acronis True Image cannot be used to transfer programs or applications between computers, and it is not recommended to move your old version of Windows to your new computer unless both are running the same version of Windows."
I guess then, I do not understand the purpose of having an image that can be restored to dissimilar hardware. I had thought that it was designed to move an exact copy of the failed computer to a new computer so that there would be no time consuming program/application installations on the new computer (other than missing drivers). I was considering upgrading/purchasing Acronis True Image 2017 with Universal Restore capabilities because there is a legacy program residing on the laptop that requires being archived for at least three more years.
I am still somewhat of a beginner but have successfully imaged new hard drive in same laptop and imaged old laptop to new laptop using the Universal Restore. Now it appears that I was successful both times only because 1) new hard drive was still in same laptop, 2) old laptop and new laptop were both legacy/MBR and running the same OS, which was Windows 7 Home Edition. So the question becomes, with this third instance, is this happening because the legacy/MBR laptop was running Windows 7 Home Edition and the new laptop was running UEFI/GPT Windows 8.1? I thought that I had worked out all of the hardware/software issues when the image performed as expected. How do I resolve this? I am feeling like this is defeating the purpose of having a backup image plan in place. If I am misunderstanding something, please correct me.
