Issues with backing up Window 8.1 OS partition

Thread needs solution

I just got a new dell Inspirion 5547 laptop. I wanted to make backup of all the preloaded software
before I started the intial configuration and loading. So I had to set the boot mode to legacy and secre boot to off for the laptop to booted to the external DVD. ATI 2015 booted up and to my surprise I found 5 partitions on the hard drive. These were OS (31GB), ESP (29.59mb), DIAGS(4mb), WinRetools (247.5mb) and PBR Image (7.504GB). The size are used spaces naturally. So I decide to backup each partition
individually. I had no issues till I got to the OS partition. When I tried to backup this up it told me it would take 2 hours. ( a little long for 31GB I thought. Well I left it do its thing and after about 3 hours it completed the backup. Now I was surprise when I check to see the size of the image to be only about 32GB. My question is what was going on for those 3 hours. Something isn't right.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Ken

This is weird indeed. It could be an issue with the destination. For example, an issue with USB 3.0 support?
