Is it best to make ALL backups from the recovery boot disc and always verify?

Thread needs solution

Hello everyone,

I am new to Acronis and the forum so please excuse me if this question has been asked and answered I didn't find anything like it by using the search.

Another user who recommended Acronis to me sent me a link that said " Always make all your backups from the recovery CD and then verify them immediately."

I don't understand this logic, if you have the updated program on your HD and also have an updated boot CD why would there be any more safety in using one over the other? Of course we all want to know that the backups are good so I understand why verifying right away is a great idea.

Thanks to all in advance

Since all recoveries are done in the recovery environment and not under Windows (unless you are running from a separate system partition than the one you are trying to image), it is good practice to validate under the recovery environment. This is not a requirement but a suggestion. Personally, I always make backups (disk images) from WinPE running from bootable media, and recovery this way too. I don't like involving Windows in imaging a running Windows system. I prefer to make an image of a static system rather than a dynamic system, but this is not a requirement. Others have their own preferences and practices in this regard.

I try to always have a valid "cold" backup taken via bootable media. To me, the best "cold" backup is one that can be popped in and booted up, giving me an immediately usable system. It might not be current, but it should be usable for productive work right away. So I maintain at least two physical duplicate hard drives (same model number and capacity) and clone one to the other on a monthly basis, give or take. And by swapping the usage, I spread out the wear and tear across both clone drives.

In addition to the cloning operation, I also take "warm" images, mostly by way of automated tasks, but I will make manual images too, whenever I make substantial changes to my system or data files.

P.S. I should note that the cold cloning operation copies all of my partitions, and I have nearly a terabyte of data. This takes a long time so I set it up before bedtime and let it run all night.

Take a look at Seekforever's post #3 in this thread regarding validation via Windows and the recovery CD - http://forum.acronis.com/forum/11886

Very informative!

Thank you all for your helpful comments and advice! Interesting that Linux is on the rescue CD. I have successfully restored my C drive using the CD after validating it. Everything worked as planned. The archives are kept on an external HD that is used solely for that purpose, it only runs when I need to use it.

Regards and thanks again,

Only the Acronis loader and ISOLINUX bootable media are Linux based. WinPE (and BartPE) are "limited" Windows Vista/XP systems run from bootable media. Just for clarification.
