Just purchased Acronis True image 2012 and Plus Pack

Thread needs solution

Hi there everyone:)

Having just purchased Acronis True image Home Edition and the plus pack today I was wondering if you can give me advice for the following questions:-

1.) I have Acronis True Image 8 installed currently and it has worked really well - Should I uninstall it first before installing Acronis True image 12 and the plus pack?

2.) I have registered ATI 12 right away - My current computer is old (Windows XP SP3). I am considering buying a new one or might even wait for Windows 8. If I don't install ATI 12 right away, would it be ok to install and activate the product in say 4 months time, or does the serial number have to be activated within 1 month or within a set time limit?

3.) If I chose to install ATI 12 right away should I delete external backup.tib files created with Acronis True Image 8?

All answers much appreciated - Have a good day - Howard:)

Greetings Howard,
There have been many enhancements and features added to the product since v8. I personally would uninstall, reboot and perform a fresh install of 2012 using the latest build available (download from your acct) to install with.

You can install and activate later if you wish, there is no timeframe to activate until the program is installed on your system.

I am not in the habit of deleting old back ups, unless I am absolutely sure I will never need this data again. Images can always be mounted and browsed, files can be recovered from these images if needed.

Thanks

As suggested by shadowsports, the deletion of backups is not to be encouraged. You just never know when they will be needed. Also be sure and keep the v8 CD if you keep v8 backups. This is just a good insurance should you have issues.

One very important point, if you plan to install 2012 onto the xp system, before you do the v8 uninstall, be sure and perform a full and complete backup of your existing system so that you have the capability of restoring your system back to when v8 was installed and working.

Many thanks for the replies shadowsports and GroverH - Your prompt replies are much appreciated:)

I tended when backing up to use Acronis Secure Zone and also an external hard drive, although I never used the recovery startup manager - I do have an emergency rescue disk...

I am very happy to know that there is no time limit for installing and activating the software. Acronis 8 has served me really well and never let me down - Having said that I do plan to buy a new computer this year and will need the updated version.

I will definitely take your advice and keep the backups on my external drive for version 8 when I do install version 12.

All the best

Howard:)

Note: If you get a new system, do NOT install TrueImage until you have made a backup of your new system by using the 2012 CD which is available for download anytime after you register the purchase of 2012. The file to create the CD is the ISO download. It is possible to make a backup of your system without installing by creating the Acronis bootable CD from the ISO download.

Many thanks Grover:)

As my purchase is registered already, I wonder Is there a link where I can download the 2012 CD download ISO file in my account? I didn't notice it although I might have been looking in the wrong place!

Creating a bootable rescue CD from the ISO makes sense before installing the software on a new PC...

Howard:)

it is the middle listing when at your Acronis Downloads link.

You have two licenses to register. The regular program and then the plus pack.
The iso download you want is from the plus pack registration.

Many thanks:) - I have now downloaded it now under "bootable media" and burnt the .iso file to my CD for future use. I will definitely take your advice and use it to backup when I get a new computer, before installing Acronis 12.

I read your excellent guide re installing version 12 and also the sticky posts in the forum to familiarise myself with the software. I know many will find your illustrated guide really useful.

There would appear to be a number of teething problems with 2012 Home edition reading the different comments, posts and reviews. I have no doubt that the Acronis technical people will sort these out over time, as they have done with all earlier versions. It might be an idea for me to wait anyway before installing the software until a new build is released resolving the different issues.

All the very best - Howard:)

Go ahead and test your new 2012 CD by booting into it and simulating a backup or restore or even try copying a couple files from your v8 backup into a test folder. Make sure the option for universal restore shows up on the restore option.

Also, after booted into the CD, use the help option so you can see the build information and that it also shows you have the plus pack CD.

Hi Grover:)

I tried running the new bootable recovery disk without installing Acronis 12 and it booted ok! I noticed many options but I didn't experiment as I wasn't sure what to do yet, or if it might mean that I would need to activate ATI 12 earlier then I intended - I did want to make sure that in an emergency the boot disk would run!

I still have Acronis True image 8 and backups saved in the Acronis Secure Zone and also on my external hard drive - Would the ATI 12 recovery disk be able to restore my .tib files from either source if needed if say my current recovery disk was to fail for any reason?

I do have an ATI 8 rescue disk, but I wondered if the version 12 recovery disk would work also, or is it specifically for ATI 12?

Many thanks for all the useful advice.

Howard:)

According to this link, 2012 should restore a version 8 backup but my preference would be to use v8 on v8 if I had a choice but it could depend upon the situation.

Backups inside the secure zone are at risk. If the drive fails, byby to backups. Be absolutely certain you have current backups stored on other drives. Either V8 or 2012 should be tested to read those files.

The license for TI is for it to be used on one computer. V8 for your old computer and 2012 will be activated on the new computer--when installed.

Thanks again Grover:)

I always like to backup both in the secure zone and on an external hard drive also, as you say in case of disk failure! I never have used the Startup Recovery Manager, as I tend to rely more on my recovery disk. Also if I ever decided to ever use another backup program alongside ATI, changing the MBR might affect things. I would tend to use my version 8 recovery disk also when needed, but it is good to know that the other can work.

I have spent several days reading the posts and slowly am learning most of the basics. I use Revo Uninstaller Pro both to uninstall and also monitor installations. Hopefully by doing this when I install ATI 12, if I have problems with uninstalling, I will get a completely clean uninstall rather then having to use the Acronis 2012 clean up utility!

One thing I was a little unsure of when restoring a full disk image, is if I should tick the option to include MBR and sector 0 track or leave that unchecked? As I only use Windows, I am guessing that for full disk backup, assuming that the MBR was ok before, then I could leave it unchecked?

Have a very good weekend...

Howard:)

Anytime you check mark the disk as to what is to be restored, all partitions (including track0/mbr) will be included in the restore.

If your restore is only of drive C as sort of a refresher, then only drive C needs to be checked.
