Just some general questions/reccomendations for use

Thread needs solution

my basic knowledge and computer stats:

I am new to Acronis but I am NOT computer illiterate. I have been a graphic designer/web designer for over 15 yrs. My husband and I have built all my computers and I have spent the last 10 yrs. fixing other peoples virus/spyware etc. issues. This being said...I understand a fair amount of computer speak...but I am NOT fully computer lingo savvy.

I have a win. 7x64 desktop (by choice) and a laptop. and I am running the newest version of Acronis w/add on pack...and I have the basic understanding of how to use this program and what it does. I have spent my life in the teach yourself mode...but with backup...i do not really want to PLAY with it.

I am NOT on a server, and will NOT be installing to the cloud but to an external HD.

Besides keeping a regular back up of all my work, I want to make sure I have a working BU of my main HD with all the OS/drivers etc.

I need to BU my HD to move it over to a new HD (faster) (at this time the only hardware that will change is the HD) I do however want to save BU's for the future for when its time to rebuild as I did a few months ago.

Here are my questions:
1. If i am doing a BU and need to shut down computer (i live in the south and having LOTS of pop up thunderstorms) will i need to START OVER or will it continue when i reboot?

2. can i BU WHILE i am using the computer?

3. i am thinking i should go with the build that gives me one continues updated version....thoughts?

4. once i go to move the BU to the new hard drive...is there anything special i need to do? (NOTE: i will recover to the new HD before installing as main HD)

5. in the FUTURE...do i need to do anything special if i do a full rebuild of my computer and want to recover HD at that time?

thanks so much for any help. i have lost stuff in the past and have spent the last 5 yrs. trying to remember to BU manually on a daily basis as the fear of Acronis being to techy.

1. I'm not aware of any way to have an interrupted backup resume, especially when interrupted by a crash due to power failure. You really should have a UPS for your desktop if you do commercial work in a power-failure prone area.

2. Yes.

3. I don't know what that means. True Image does not update itself automatically.

4. You should create full disk mode Backups. Select the checkbox for the entire disk (not just individual partitions). For this option, switch to disk mode (upper right blue link) until you see disks and not partitions to select. Select the disk. That ensures that you have everything you need, and you won't need to understand how the disk is laid out with possible hidden partitions. A full disk mode Backup captures everything, and is the simplest, safest backup method.

5. You'll need the ATI bootable Rescue Media, so you should create that now.

Check out the many user guides and tutorials in the left margin of this forum, particularly Getting Started and Grover's True Image Guides which are illustrated with step-by-step screenshots.

thank you. first i HAVE a UPS. there are 2 problems with that. one, it will NOT hold for hours while doing a BU. also, no matter HOW GOOD your UPS is and mine IS GREAT! if lightening hits your house, or power lines etc, it can still fry your computer (which is why i said need to shut down computer NOT a computer CRASH). therefor, during a BAD storm i either shut down as its coming in...or when i realize its bad and unplug it to be very very very safe.

as for #3...my mistake i guess as i've been reading til i'm blind the last couple days. maybe i am thinking incremental (apologies as i said i'm fairly computer knowledgeable but not fully and i understand much more than i can describe). i saw somewhere in the tons of *user friendly software* stuff about this. i will go over the guide and the many many posts (grovers and figure it out myself)
