Laptop backup/recovery to/from external USB

Thread needs solution

I just purchased a new laptop with Windows 7.

Can Acronis “clone” the internal hard drive (HD) to an external USB HD that can be used to recover to a new HD installed in the laptop if/when the internal HD fails?

If so, can the image be in a partition dedicated to the clone data on the external USB HD that has other partitions on it?

Thanks.

You would probably want to create an Entire Disk Image backup (not a Clone) and save that to the USB drive. The image could be saved into a partition dedicated to backups or into an existing partition (in it's own folder, for example).

Thanks,

Assuming that the laptop's HD had totally failed and a new blank HD is installed. How would I recover the Image backup stored on the external USB drive or a DVD disk.
