MAC - clone to smaller SSD

Thread needs solution

I have got a macbook with a 500 gb HDD. Because there are only 150 gb in use I like to clone the system to a 250 gb ssd. Is that possible with mac? I have only experience with windows systems. I would like to do this with the bootable cd.

Marco, welcome to these user forums.

I am not a Mac user so have no direct experience in using the Mac version of ATIH - you may wish to post this question in the Acronis True Image for Mac Forum where you will find other Mac users.

I cannot find any mention of Cloning in the ATIH User Guide documentation so am unsure whether the bootable Rescue Media for Mac even provides this type of capability.

What you can do is to do a full Backup of your Macbook 500GB HDD to another backup drive and then Recover this full backup to the new 250GB SSD drive.  This is how I would recommend any user to achieve the same result as doing cloning but with the additional safety net of not putting your source drive at risk provided that you remove the 500GB HDD and replace it with the 250GB SSD before starting the recovery using the Boot CD.

Accronis for Mac does not offer a clone feature.  You must take a backup image and restore it.  The same applies for OS X (now MacOS) using Time Machine.  Disk Utility has become convoluted since 10.11 as well so.  If you want to clone instead of backup/restore, you'd need to use something else.  There are some specific OS X cloning tools out there.  Personally though, since cloning is "on the fly" and has no safety net or point of return in case something does go wrong, I'd recommend you backup and restore over cloning, regardless of the application you use.

If I remember correctly (it's been awhile since I used Acronis for Mac), I believe in 2015 you had to backup from the OS and had to restore from the rescue media.
