Making disk backup process faster...

Thread needs solution

Using Home 2010: OK... I am trying to use Xpilot's disk backup solution, but have a question about making it more automated...

What I did: Using a 1 TB drive on a Thermaltake BlacX caddy to hold disk images. Have twin 320GB laptop drives that I used the restore w/ change size tutorial on (Thanks to the authors!!). Both drives have properly functioning images from the older 80GB drive. Because I was changing sizes, and because the disk has two Primary partitions (Dell OEM and Boot (C:)), I had to restore the partitions one at a time for the HDD upgrade.

My Question(s):

1) What's the best way to set up a backup rotation where the image is routinely created (I have a choice between the 1TB on the caddy (less desirable, because it spins all the time) or my NAS via network.

2) When I restore the image from the remote source (one of the ones listed above), since I don't have to resize, can I restore the image with the "Disk" box checked IF when I sort using the Partition heading, it lists the partitions:

  • BIOS, Sector 0
  • OEM
  • C:

which is the correct order per Windows Disk Manager?

Thanks!

Hello Clay!

Thank you for finding time to open the thread regarding this question! I will be glad to assist you!

  1. Actually it's up to you to decide the best way to set up a backup rotation where the image is routinely created, since both locations are fine, though I would advise to use NAS since caddy is less preferable. You can set a task for backup creation, for instance, full + incremental backup. I would advise you to take a look at the chapters 3.2 and 6 in the User's Guide.
  2. In case you have only C: drive with the OEM partition, you can safely check "Disk" box to get the image recovered entirely. it is not recommended to reduce OEM partition size.
