Message: Failed to recover data (can't find the backup)

Thread needs solution

Checking my backups I find trouble.  It seems that all the backups are alright, but when I try to reach them from True image 2014 a got a failure message.

When I established the backup I startet with full disk backup and with weekly add of changes.  After 10 of this adds I start on again automatic with full backup as you can see in the attached file picture.  As my destination drive had no more space I delete older full backup together with their weekly adds.

The picture shows two full backup (26.10.2016 and 11.01.2017).  Did I something wrong when I deleted backups earlier than 26.10.2016?  I did it in the file manager.

How should I overcome the Failed to recover data of backup issue?

Hope for help.

llars, welcome to these user forums.

When you delete backup files via file manager, this leaves information behind in the Acronis database files which holds information on the backup history etc.

Click on the icon of a cog wheel to the right of your task name (right of the backup now button) and take the option there to do a Validation of your backup task.  This should throw up an error message for each missing / deleted backup file.  Take the Ignore option for each message until you finish the validation, this should reconcile the information held in the Acronis database files with the status of files still present.

You should use the automatic cleanup rules in your task configuration to control how many backup files are kept rather than manually deleting these files via file manager.

My preferred cleanup rule is to Store no more than X recent version chains which will require that you have sufficient space on your backup storage drive for X+1 Full backups, plus X x all the Incremental backup files associated with each retained Full backup, i.e. SSD 2016_full_b3_s1_v1 + SSD 2016_inc_b3_s2 - s11_v1 = 1 recent version chain.

Acronis will only remove the oldest version chain when the next Full backup has been successfully created, so if you had X=2 then Acronis would only delete the B3 version chain when the full_b5_ backup was created.

Hi Steve

Thanks a lot for answer with very good explanation of the reason for my problem and how to solve it.  I shall also look into Grovers "How to" https://forum.acronis.com/forum/56872

I have used Acronis for more than 10 years and have only used restore once when I replaced my drive on a laptop with a new ssd, but I'm glad I investigated my backups now.

As mentioned I have used Acronis for years and have many older backups coming up when starting Acronis.  Most of them has been deleted in the file manager. I suppose I get rid of them in Acronis using the validation option mentioned in your answer.

(I always backup to an internal drive in my computer and copy the backup from there to an extern diskdrive monthly).

llars, if you have old backups showing in the task list, and you no longer need these, then just using the Delete option from the task settings menu should be all that is needed, as this will remove the references to the unwanted task from the Acronis database files.

Hi Steve

Thanks, but I like the option checking the existance of a backup before I delete it. However I have now made a sheet with all backups, backup places and checkpoint and will try to keep it ajour quarterly. It belong of course in my safe.
