meta deletion issues

Thread needs solution

Hello Anderson Player,

We are really sorry for the delay with the response.

In case if you're using Acronis Backup&Recovery 10: the .meta folder contains meta-information on the backups in the same folder and it is not recommended to delete, since you won't be able to create it manually.

There can be some issues without that .meta folder, for example:

  • You cannot append an incremental or differential backup to the one that's missing the .meta folder. Instead a full backup will be created;
  • A new backup in the folder may have an unusual name. E.g, RecreatedArchive_D68A57AA-E2A3-4C34-174-C2BC89957D72_2009_08_21_14_47_53_625F.TIB.

However, even if the .meta folder is deleted or lost, you will still be able to restore the backup.

Thank you.

Thank you. However, even when I create a brand new back up in an empty folder, no new meta is created. That is my concern. I have two drives. If I create a new full back up on one, it does create a new meta folder. The other, no. Please shed some light on this.

For years now, I have been copying acronis backups from one server to another thinking I was protecting my backups by storing them in two locations. And sometimes, I would delete the original backup folders on one server, thinking I was protected because I had copies on other servers.

But I never realized there was a hidden, permissions-protected folder named .meta that wasn't being copied, making my copied backups almost useless. Acronis has done a pretty evil thing to it users with this thoughtless bit of deception.

Why hide something as important as .meta, and then fail to mention it to IT people who are only trying to protect their users with backups? This is nothing but a stab in the back...

Hello Lynn,

Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

You see, that .meta folders were implemented only in Acronis Backup&Recovery product line. Older products doesn't have any metadata folders, there were a different method of managing databases with backups information.

Once again, we are really sorry for the difficulties you've experienced.

Please reply to this thread if you have any further questions.

Thank you.

With all of the response comments from Acronis, and with all due respect, I know no more than when I originally posted. Just what versions of Acronis Backup and Recovery were NOT suppose to have a meta folder? and, does that include Acronis home 11 as one that should not have a meta folder? and, if not, why does mine have it and why was I told to disregard it?

Way to many questions here and too few answers.

Ilya:
I now am really confused with your last comment. You say that .meta folders were implemented only in "Acronis Backup&Recovery" product line which doesn't include TI Home.

I am using TI Home 2010, Build 7046 and "metabase" information database is used throughout the user manual. Or do you just store the Home version's in a folder named something different from ".meta"?

And I am having problems with its "Data Recovery & Backup Management" screen.
--------------------
Background: I am taking "full" Drive C image backups weekly.
Comment: I can find each of the image files in IExplorer but I only find the last one in "Recovery" and it is has the "image name" of Week1 but points to the Week2 backup image. And when I "Browse for Backup", I only find the folders but no files. I can use the TI Home Boot disk and find/recovery the files with no problems. Any idea what is happening? Thanks.
