Migrate from 150GB OCZ Vertex SSD to Samsung 850 EVO 750GB SSD

Thread needs solution

I am currently running True Image 2013 build 6514. I just tried restoring an Acronis Image file to my new Samsung SSD. The process failed:

1. Created the Acronis image backup of the smaller SD on 2TB internal HDD
2. Remove the smaller SD and install the larger SD on same connector
3. Boot from the True Image Boot CD
4. Use the Tools menu/Add new disk option
5. Begin to restore image fil
6. Restore failed in 5 seconds

Subsequently I tried to look at the new SSD, and I can't see the disk using ANY software:
1. Setup / BIOS
2. Acronis Disk Director
3. Acronis True Image

Acronis True Image 2013 may have damaged my $170 SSD - but that seems unlikely. I hope someone else seen the problem before, and has a way to revive the SSD.

I called Samsung technical support about the problem. They suggested I get a replacement drive through the RMA process. This is the first problem of any sort I have had in four years of using SSD for various computers.

I once had similar problems as you are experiencing and it happened with Drive Cleanser in tools. See if the new SSD appears in Disk Management when you install it where the HDD is located. If not, try this software, Parted Magic. It's worked well for me, including the abilty to perform a secure erase on SSDs.

Boot from the CD after bruning. It takes a while to load. If the drive does not appear then it's been made defective. Maybe the firmware got corrupted and there is a way to reinstall that with a download. Also, keep in mind with repsect to warranties, that they often replace a defective drive with a refurbished drive. So much for warranties.

If you are able to get the drive working, after booting from the Acronis CD, recover the image using the RECOVERY option, and not something from TOOLS.

If you do get the new SSD working again, connect it in place of the HDD and use DISK MANAGEMENT to create a new single simple quick formatted partion. Then replace the HDD, and exchange the new SSD for the old one. Then boot from the Acronis CD and only use the Recovery option. Don't get involved with Tools.

Another option if the drive continues to not appear. My best guess it that it won't work since the drive never appears. Samsung provides cloning software and it's own Magician software. Maybe the cloning software will detect the drive? I would keep the new SSD as a D drive until it works. If yes, the Magician software has the abilty to update the firmware. If you get the drive working, I would still use the Acronis Recovery method as described above.

Scroll down in the link for the Magician software also.

Jacob, by the time you had replied, I already packed up the SSD for mailing and sent it out for replacement. I puchased a duplicate Samsung EVO 850 SSD, and restored my Acronis image to it sucessfully yesterday.

Got your reply. And out of the clear blue I just encountered the exact same problem with an older SSD that I use for experimenting with new software. Not sure why it happened. The drive was not visible. I ran Parted Magic, did a secure erase since it appeared there, and then did a MBR erase also, in the options to erase. After that I connected the drive as a D drive, went to Disk Management, and the option to create an MBR appeared. After that the disk worked and the entire drive appeared as unallocated!!! I was subsequently able to format it.

I finally migrated my data - filled up both of my Samsung 500 GB SSD with data, and retired my 1 TB fixed disk drive.
