Migrating to a new boot drive

Thread needs solution

My system is working fine but I want to migrate my main drive to a new hard drive. What is the best way to do this? Should I just do a backup and recovery or should I use the clone drive utility?

I started the backup and recovery approach but it is a bit confusing since I can't restore the MBR, system reserved and main partition at once. I am having to do it in 3 steps but I don't know if it will work

The backup and restore method works well. It is important to know how the partition structure on your original disk is set up. Knowing which partition is active is crucial. Acronis will automatically make the first partition you restore the active partition. If the first partition is not the active partition, make the correct partition active when restoring it. When restoring the partitions, it is okay to restore each one separately. Do not resize the System Reserved partition, or any other partitions except for the OS partition and any data partitions you may have created. If the drive is MBR, restore the MBR and Disk Signature last. Doing all the restores from the boot disk (Rescue Media) is the best method, and you can do each partition one after the other without exiting the Rescue Media.
Performing a clone and having Acronis auto resize the partitions to fit needlessly increases the size of the System Reserved and other partitions, wasting space that should be applied to your OS and/or data partitions.

That's what I tried to do but the drive but the drive isn't bootable. I guess I didn't do the MBR last. My drive has 2 partitions, the active one and one which is reserved. Do I have to restart the process or can I now just add the MBR?

It sounds like I should do the active (main) partition first, then the system reserved and then the MBR?

thanks.

The System Reserved partition should be restored first, then the OS partition. Normally the System Reserved partition is the active partition on a two partition system such as yours. Restore the MBR last including the Disk Signature.

I would restart your restore procedure over.
