Migrating to a new computer

Thread needs solution

My existing computer is showing some disturbing signs of upcoming failure. I need to buy a new one. Can I use Acronis 2012 to move my current files and programs / apps from old to new? My objective is to recreate my current on a new machine. Thanks.

Welcome Robert,
The Plus Pack version or addon to 2012 might allow a user's system image to be restored to new hardware. This is not 100% guaranteed and there are instances where this is not possible.

In your case however, attempting to migrate a system with problems or one you suspect will fail often only moves these issues with your migration. Success depends on more than one factor. The old and new hardware itself, as well as the type and level of failure. Software corruption, hardware failure, etc.

There is no way for us to know your current system state. If your drive is failing and struggling to run, I would only attempt to copy my data off the drive to a safe location. You can also try to make a full back up image of your disk, which can likely be mounted later and browsed for files.

I don't want to encourage you to attempt any operations on hardware that might fail as a result. Figure out how to safegard your data, then you can explore what to do next.
