Migration Assistant capabilities

Thread needs solution

I'm trying to understand the Migration Assistant's capabilities. Will it migrate applications from a Windows 7 system to Windows 8? Does that include more-complex applications such as MS Office?

The Migration Assistant (using the Plus Pack's Universal Restore) allows for restoring images made on one computer to be restored onto a new (or different) computer with different hardware. A full disk backup image will contain both the OS and all applications installed on the source system. The OS, and all applications would be restored to the new computer if the full disk image was restored. Migration Assistant does not "move" or copy programs from one system to another.

A program that does "move or copy" applications and settings is Lap Link's PC Mover.

Although many people have used this program with great success, there are others that have found this doesn't work well.

I find it better to install any programs you need on Windows 8 from scratch, then use the Windows 7 (and Windows 8) Easy Transfer application to backup and restore the users account settings and files from Windows 7 to Windows 8 system.

If you are planning a "clean" install of Windows 8 on a system with Windows 7 installed, Use Windows 7's Easy Transfer application to backup the users settings and files to an external drive or a network location. Install Windows 8 and the required applications, and then use Windows 8 Easy Transfer application to restore from the Windows 7 Easy Transfer file previously saved.

The Easy Transfer application can also perform over a network from one system to another.
