Migration from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 Ultimate

Thread needs solution

Did a search but couldn't find an answer to my question:

Can I migrate my C drive from Vista (32 bit) and have it work on Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) using True Image 2010 with my programs, files, settings etc. all intact? If so, how?

I know PC Mover does this type of thing but I'd rather buy True Image because it does so much more.

Hello Ainsworth,

I understand the question and will do everything possible from my side to give you a clear explanation.

Using Acronis True Image Home 2010 you can clone entire system to a new hard drive including OS, applications, settings and data. It will result in formatting destination hard drive. You can’t transfer separate applications with their settings to a new operating system as you described.

Using Acronis True Image Home 2010 you can backup applications settings not the application executable files. If an application seems to malfunction or ceases to run you are supposed to reinstall it using the last updates and then recover your settings from the backup. You can backup only those application settings which are listed by Acronis True Image Home 2010.

I may recommend you download free trial version of Acronis True Image Home 2010 and check it functionality.

Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you.

Is the Win 7 64 bit on a completely different machine? If it is, it is far better to reinstall all your Apps. even if it is just to make sure they will run in a 64 bit environment. The data files you can simply copy over using windows explorer first to an external drive or flash drive, then on to the new system.

Thanks for the explanations, Dmitry. I'll download the trial and give it a test run.

DwnNDrty, yes the Windows 7 64 bit is on a different machine. The reason I'd like to copy over the apps is because I have so many and they're set just the way I like them. Installing everything over again would be a nightmare (I'll do it if I have to but I'm trying to avoid it).

Thanks for the info guys.

Don't see where anyone specifically addressed this, but the answer to the question of whether you can "upgrade" from 32-bit to 64-bit is basically -- no. You will have to do a fresh install. You may be able to save off and restore data files and settings, but you'll have to install the apps afresh.
