Monitor for Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close

Thread needs solution

Thanks for help. Win XP Pro SP 3. Every time I start computer I get message in subject line. I emailed tech support while I still had 5 days of free tech support after update to 2013 but got no response, so free tech support has now expired. Bummer. Tech support has been unsatisfactory for a paid for product as it has been difficult to get a timely response from them. Update from 2012 was a long bad dream, email tech support finally sorted it out except now every time I start my computer I get the error message in the subject line. Could not find this exact issue in KB or forums.

I back up to an external drive and it is the same whether drive is connected or not. When I boot laptop I always get this message. ATIH 2013 seems to create scheduled (3X/week) backups OK. But I do not know if ATIH will actually back up as it should since backup archive explorer does not seem to run. What does it do and do I need it running at startup? Is it necessary for a successful backup operation?

I ran AITH2013 installer with repair option a few times, sometimes successful sometimes unsuccessful. Left it with successful repair but Image Backup Archive Explorer problem continues.

Odd thing (at least to me) every time I have run the 2013 installer about maybe 25% into the install Skipe opens and wants me to log in to run Skipe. Why does something in the installer keep triggering Skipe which has never taken the initiative to ask me to run it before.

Attached word doc has screen shots and more information.
Thanks for your help.

Did tech support have you uninstall 2013,run the 2013 cleanup utility (and check the registry for leftover Acronis entries), and then re-install 2013 while troubleshooting your issues?

What security software is installed on your system?

James, thank you for your reply.
Tech support never responded to my requests for assistance with this issue. They finally assisted by email, telephone & remote access with the troublesome install of ATIH2013 after I upgraded from 2012. By the time that was completed and this new issue showed up I only had 5 days to expiration of the 30 day free tech support - which expired without response after the 5 days. So they have not addressed this issue.

I have not tried uninstalling 2013 and reinstalling, running a cleanup utility, removing remaining registry entries before a reinstall of 2013. only running repair from the installer which has not resolved the issue. If you give me clear specific instructions I can probably follow them, though I have no experience editing the registry and am hesitant to make changes to the registry.

Will this procedure effect the backups or access to them that I have on an external drive?
I guess I could always delete them from the external drive via windows explorer if the metadata no longer exists in Acronis and it cannot access them. And then just start over from scratch.

What exactly does ATIH Image Backup Archive Explorer do? Do I need it to perform a backup? In which case I am not really protected without it operating normally. Yes?
Thanks for your attention.
Leon

Oh, forgot the security software.
The only security software running in the background is Panda Global Protection 2013 which includes anti-virus, some malware, anti-spam and firewall. I would of course disable it before uninstalling and reinstalling. Btw I have been using Panda for about 10 years and NOTHING has ever gotten past it!
Thanks again,
Leon

The Acronis Cleaner won't touch your images, it just removes TI from registry and some of the shared files that might have been inuse when the uninstaller was running. There is one side effect of using the cleaner, which is it will disable though not uninstall any other Acronis product you have installed, so if you have Disk Director or Disk Monitor they will need to have a repair install run, after rebooting.

Here is the link to the 2013 cleaner, make sure you read the instructions conerning rebooting carefully.

Acronis Cleaner

Thank you Colin.
I have printed the instructions from the KB article you linked to and downloaded and saved the Cleanup Utility. I have noted the instructions regarding rebooting. I believe this is what you are referring to:

6. (!) After using Cleanup Utility, it is strongly recommended not to reboot the machine, go to Start -> Run -> regedit, and verify that there are no snapman*, fltsrv, tdrpman*, vidsflt*, timounter strings in the following keys:
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} -> UpperFilters and LowerFilters
o HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} -> UpperFilters and LowerFilters

I have never edited a registry before so will I'll need to proceed cautiously. I assume once in regedit there will be something similar or analogous to a folder tree in explorer, that being the case I should be able to find the above "HKEY_ ....." entries, expand them and look for the "strings" listed above. Since I am looking to verify that these "strings" are NOT there, I assume that if I find any, I should delete them (that is will be obvious what to delete), probably by highlighting and hitting the delete key. Then exit regedit and reboot and then reinstall ATIH2013. Since I also have DiskDirector installed, I will then run the Repair option from the installer for that.

Thank you for taking the time to go over these details with me - I am in new territory here and do not want to cause any new issues. I will probably have the time to do this over the weekend. Thanks again for your guidance,
Leon

Leon,

You are correct, it will have a folder view down the left side similar to a windows Explorer layout. The actual filter ID's will be there, the only thing that needs to be checked is the specific Acronis devices as noted in #6 in your list. Don't delete any other entries that appear alongisde the Filter entries.

To delete the entry, you select modify and just backspace along side the entries if the cursor is to the right of them or use the delete key if you have the cursor to the left of the device.

Thanks again.
It may be that what I don't know is the specific meaning of the terms: keys, strings, filters, and once I am in the registry, it will all be pretty obvious. The language is new, the operations may be easy.

Is it advisable and is there a way to back-up and restore the registry? Just in case.
I was going to do a fresh Acronis backup of both partitions on my HD before proceeding anyway. Will that give me an accessible/re-storable registry backup?
Leon

If you make a complete image of the disk or OS partition the registry is included. You can manually copy/export the registry hives, if you wish.

Below are some screen shots of my Windows 7 registry (note there is a slight difference in what you will see when you click on modify, XP doesn't pop up a box as W7 it basically shows everything the same as the actual registry entry.), the highlighter shows which entries you are looking for or need to remove.

Your fltsrv file number will probably be different to mine as I am running ABR11.5 on my machine and True Image probably has a different number.

Registry entry.

Colin,
Thank you very much for your concise targeted responses to my questions.
ATIH13 uninstalled, clean up utility run, registry cleaned up, TI13 reinstalled without any glitch. TI seems to be working as it should. No more error messages. Did full backup with it with no issues. No need to restore anything, can only assume when needed there will be no issues. Only thing was that the full backup I did before the reinstall got renamed. No problem as it will get deleted automatically in a few weeks anyway. Seems DiskDirector11 was uninstalled in the process, no problem, reinstalled it and while I have not performed any operations with it, when I open it everything seems in order there too.

If I had known about the Clean Up Utility and run it between uninstalling TI12 and installing TI13, I would have probably avoided all the install issues with 13. Now I know and will save it.
Thanks again for your great support,
Leon

Leon,

No problem, just a couple of things to watch out for, if TIH starts playing up, you might need to uninstall both DD 11 and TIH, then install DD11 first and TIH last, this is because DD11 hasn't been updated in a while so the build number of its filters are older than TI 2013's. Sometimes the filter DLLs get changed when DD11 is installed but not always, so if the system starts playing up again, installing DD11 first and then 2013 may well solve that problem.

Colin,
Thanks for the heads up. These are the details that one only learns by doing tech support or having a fix resolve an issue. I will keep that in mind - actually, I'll make a note of it and put it in my Acronis folder. At this point I am ready for everything to just work seamlessly. If I do have to uninstall and reinstall again, I will follow the sequence you suggest.

BTW, your screen shots of what I would encounter once in regedit were very helpful. Thanks again for the quality of attention you gave to my posts.
With my best wishes,
Leon
