Moving Backup Files

Thread needs solution

I have been using ATIH for about a year. Recently bought a bigger external hard drive. I would like to copy all the backup files from the "small" drive to the new Big drive. How can I do this and still being to use the files in case of restore?

ATI is supposed to be able to track the location of backups when you change the destination in the process of running the task, but I do not recommend to try this...

You can move your backup anywhere you want as long as you track where they are. If ATi doesn't find a piece of a chain of backup (full+incrementals, or full+differential), it will ask you in cryptic ways (specify location of volume x)...

So, I strongly recommend you move entire chains of backup. Never separate a full from the partials that are built from it.

If you don't use the default backup naming, ie ABC(x) indicates a full, and ABC(1)2 indicates a partial on top of the full, it is somewhat hard to identify easily backup chains.

You can use Windows Explorer to move complete backup chains. To be more confident that the copy has not done any damage, validate the chains you have moved.
