Multiple Daily Backups

Thread needs solution

Well. I am completely confused. I'm sure it's my settings but I can't get this straightened out. My True Image 2013 was working fine until I ran out of space on my external drive and decided to replace it with a WD Elements with 3 TB of space. It had some issues backing up at first; sometimes it did and sometimes it didn't. Now, it seems to be making three incremental copies a day and already says it's running out of space. I want a daily incremental backup with the fifth being complete. How do I achieve this?

You can use example GH12 to set up your backup scheme.

The first backup will be ALWAYS be a FULL BACKUP, followed by number of incremental's you set into your configuration such as
"Full plus 4 incremental's", thus for you, your chain length is 5.

Next, select how many chains (of 5 files per chain) you wish to retain, before you want deletion of oldest chain to occur--
"Store x number of recent version chains". If you select 4 in the "Store 4 recent version chains", you are indicating you wish to retain 4 chains of 5 files per chain, or a total of 20 tib files before automatic deletion (automatic cleanup) occurs.
Once you reach of storage limit of 20 files (4 chains), the next backup (Full B5) will exceed the retention limit and upon completion of Full B5 (backup #21), the automatic deletion of the oldest chain (B1 of 5 files) will occur. Next automatic deletion will not occur until Full B6 is created, etc.
Note. If you wish to retain more than 4 chains (20 backups), then increase the "Store 4 recent version chains to a higher number of chains with the resulting delay of automatic deletion. For example, if you increase the store number to 6, then first automatic deletion will occur after backup Full B7 or after backup #31.

GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. 6 Inc, Keep 4 chains. The 6-4 is an example only with user choice for whatever number of chains to be retained best fits the individual needs.

Your change to a new storage disk dictates that you must create a new backup task as the programs uses the disk ID for a check before the backup will begin. The new target disk must be attached when new task created. Stop using the task which is not working correctly.

If wish to understand more about the program, a review of this next link as well as other links in my signature.

Thanks. This will be helpful. I understand what you have said and I will give it a try. However, how does this address that it is making three backups every day to the same external drive? Thanks, again.

--------
If scheduling enabled,
Be sure target disk is attached
check the scheduling/advanced settings
Do Scroll the screen upwards/downwards to reveal the hidden settings.

Only options to be checked is the
Wake computer
Prevent computer from sleeping
Uncheck the two options about "if missed" run at startup.

Make sure the old task is either removed or non-scheduled.

Thanks. Finally, the Backup and Recovery tab opened, and it looks like its trying to make two backups at once.

Let me know your results after the new task only in use. Recheck my post #3 as I edited the posting which you may or may not have seen.

One major cause of the past is that each task needs its own individual task name and storage folder. Yours appear to be using the same task name and the same location for multiple tasks. Set the new task to its own unique name and its own folder or sub-folder name.

GroverH -- Thanks for your help. I'm cancelling the two backups that are going on now, and I'll try your suggestions tomorrow. Thanks. -- Dave

Post a new capture showing only the single active task.

What settings did you use for your new scheme? How many inc and how many chains retained?

GroverH -- When I just went into True Image 2013, I found tasks set for the wrong drives. They already were turned off. I'd like to delete those tasks; how? I also found two tasks set for the correct drive, but those, too, were turned off. Yet, two backups began as I was looking over the settings. I turned them off via the Task Manager. I'd like to delete those tasks also (and start fresh with GH12). How can I do that? It occurs to me that I have found the tasks turned off before and have turned them on. I wonder if this has caused the repetitive backups. Am I not saving the settings properly?

This link can help you to understand 2013. Note the comments in figure 17-18 about the do not schedule saves.

GH20. Remove Single Task from Task Menu Listing

I don't have 2013 installed so I can only offer from guides from a couple years ago.

You should be able to look at your main menu and look at the task and the task scheduling label should indicate whether scheduled or not scheduled.

This link was for 2014 but may be applicable.
GH1. How to change a backup task from scheduled to "Do Not Schedule".

-----------------------
GH57. Assorted task features.

Post a new capture of your main menu and it will show whether task scheduled or scheduled.
If scheduled, there will be a date and time.
If not scheduled, it will read off or "turn on"

GH20 will remove the task from the listing and no further backups will accrue.

I added additional comments to my prior posting.

GroverH -- Thank you very much. The previous tasks appear to be gone. I set up a new task and it is running the full back up now. So far so good; I think the issues are solved. I very much appreciate your help and patience. I was very frustrated and confused, and you have helped so much. -- Dave
