Need Advice to Recover Data File.

Thread needs solution

In 2008 my dad backed up my C-drive with his copy of Acronis True Image. The backup was saved to my external USB drive. My dad has passed away and I now desperately need to recover a single data-file from that backup image, but I can't find the version of Acronis True Image that he used to make the backup! ...so I have two questions:

1. If I buy a copy of Acronis True Image Home 2010 will it be able to restore an image made with an older version?

2. Since the backup that my dad saved to my external drive is an image of my entire C-drive, how do I go about finding and extracting the one data-file that I need?

Thanks in advance for any assitance,
Cruise

1. You can use the trial version of TI 2010. It can restore files and supports quite a lot of the older TI images.

2. You would either Mount the image and browse to the file you need or Explore the image. Both allow simple copy & paste file extraction.

Hi MudCrab,

Thanks for your reply. I really don't mind buying a copy of Acronis True Image. Whereas my dad always backed up my system for me, I really should learn to properly backup my own system.

Would mounting or exploring expedite finding/extracting the data-file in question? Fwiw, other than my laptop's C-drive and my external USB drive I don't have any other hard drives.

Thanks again,
Cruise

PS. In case it matters, my laptop is running Windows Vista.

Mounting will make the partition image available as a drive letter in Windows Explorer. Exploring allows you to browse the image without it being mounted. Both are just as easy once you're browsing.

If you know the filename and where it is, just browse to it. Otherwise, you may need to run a search.

It's still a good idea to try the trial version as it will give you a chance to see if you like TI or have any problems before you buy it. It's up to you, though.

As it may depend on what version of TI was used to make the image, as MudCrab suggests download and install the trial version of TI 2010 and mount or explore the image, as the trial version has limitations you may need to burn a rescue disk from within the installed TI to do this, I always use a RW CD to use as a rescue disk it saves making coasters.
This way you will be able to determine that TI 2010 can read and copy the file before you purchase it.

Ok, I'll see if I can find the download for the trial version and give it a go...

My dad relied on Acronis True Image for as long as I can remember, so I sure hope it doesn't fail me in recovering my data-file (and I do know its name)!

The link is here http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/ for the trial versions.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your help - I'll give it a go this weekend (I'm bogged down with school-work now). In the event that the image is corrupted (or whatever), is there any work-around or is it all over?

Depending on the corruption level, it may still be possible to Mount and/or Explore the image. However, it wouldn't restore or pass validation. Hopefully, it's not corrupted.

Thanks MudCrab, I sure hope the image is ok (I do know that my dad always verifed his backups). Assuming the image file is ok, do you think ATI 2010 could have a problem exploring it because it was created with a 2-year old version of ATI???

That's the least I could do for all of the support I received. I find reading through the ATI Home forum kind of strange; it's so laiden with complaints! But from my very minimal experience with ATI, it gets two thumbs way up. I will definitely buy the product and use it on a regular basis...
