Need to delete old chain

Thread needs solution

My backup drive is too full to be able to do the next backup. In all the earlier versions (since 2009, customer for 6 years) I could sort this out, but now I find that I can't.

This is rubbish, so I'm going to move to another solution unless anyone has a solution that doesn't force me to delet data or spend more money on another external drive.

Please don't tell me that 2015 "is capable of creating backup schemes which will provide automatic cleanup of older versions based on how many chains you wish to retain". I know that. I've configured it to only keep 2 chains and make a new differential chain after 2 versions. That doesn't help me. I have a 3TB external, 900GB used on the internal, and can't back up because it's trying to make the next chain before deleting the first.

The way it looks, in 2015 I have to delete all my backups to make a new one -- and taking me down to 1 copy of my data is the exact opposite of why I gave Acronis my money. Pathetic.

BTW, my pair of Toshiba external 3TB drives came with some backup software.

If I am understanding correctly,
Your scheme is set
Custom/Differential
Full after 2 diff (chain length=3 tib files)
Store 2 recent version chains. (Store 2 recent version chains=Store 6 tib files)
------------------------------
your current existing backups are stalled at

_Full_B1_S1_V1
_diff_B1_S2_V1
_diff_B1_S3_V1
_Full_B2_S1_V1
_diff_B2_S2_V1
_diff_B2_S3_V1

Is this correct? If yes,
Possible workarounds
1. Manually delete the 2 oldest Diff files plus manually validate the B1 backup to create the B1 history,
and see if that creates enough space for the next full.

2. or, Change the Store number from 2 to 1 so one less chain will be created.

3. or, https://forum.acronis.com/forum/72668
... Add option to delete all previous backups 'before' every new "full version" (only)

Yes, many users have requested the option to choose whether the auto deletion occurs before or after the full replacement.

Thanks for the reply.

1) Will not work because not enough space will be freed up, and even if it would I have strong reservations.*

2) I already tried and it doesn't work because Acronis does not delete old chains until after finishing the backup.

3) Is functionally no different to deleting the files for the old backups in Windows explorer.*

* Acronis say users must not delete backups manually from the backup media because it breaks the database. Ovbiously, the absolute last this a backup should be is broken as a backup only exists in order to give high confidence in the ability to recover from a data loss event. Therefore, anything which breaks any part of the backup system is unacceptable as a workaround.

Given that Acronis has removed the functionality required to continue to use an outgrown backup disk by manually managing old backups, I see no other choice but to move the disk to the archive, start backup up to something else (with different software), and uninstall True Image (after 6 years) once the backups on that archived disk have passed the end of their retention period.

I've recommended Acronis True Image to many colleagues, friends and family members over the years, and I'll certainly be letting all them know now that I can not recommend 2015 as it is rather horribly limited.

I've had this problem in both Version 12 and Version 15. I bought a 2nd backup drive, which also filled up. I've gone back and forth a couple of times, deleting everything from one, using the other, then repeating. This is no way to handle backups, especially since the settings allow for automatic deletion of earlier backup chains. Why should I buy disk after disk?

I'm in the same problem. I try to turn on Automatic clean up, and even try create custom backup version, and for some reason it will not clean up. Last thing I want to do is manual remove backup and start fresh. This been happen on beta version, and I try to report it.. But it never get fix at all. Now I wonder why have beta version for if can't fix the bug.
