Need help recovering Nonstop Backup
To start, I am using Windows 7 64-bit with Build 5055 of True Image 2010. I can't use Build 6053 because it absolutely does not work with my version of Windows.
Long story short, hard drive failure causes me to restore from backup. This is the most relaxed I have been after a drive crapped out because I recently implemented what I thought was a sound backup practice using True Image 2010.
I have one full image backup from 1/3/10, which was shortly after installing True Image. I also set up a daily backup of My Documents and program data. I did not set up a recurring image backup choosing Nonstop Backup instead.
So... after fixing hard drive, I booted using my TI build 5055 boot CD. Using this CD I wasn't even given the option to restore the nonstop backup, but I could see my 1 image backup, and my daily data backup. I went ahead and restored the image since my apps hadn't changed much, figuring I could restore my data from Windows. The image restore went flawlessly and soon I was booting to Windows again.
The first thing I did was try to restore my data so I fired up true image in windows. Now I was given options for recovering the nonstop backup. When I click on "Recover data from nonstop backup" first the time explorer window opens, but it's blank, and a moment later the "Nonstop backup options" window opens, essentially prompting me to "setup" nonstop backup. If I cancel out of the options window, I am left with an empty time explorer window that says No Data to Display. Nowhere was I given the option to actually recover data, or even tell it where the existing archive is located.
Since TI seemed pretty concerned about me setting up Nonstop backup while I was trying to recover, I thought maybe this was part of the process. I thought that maybe this would be how TI knew where to look for the archive. So, I clicked on settings as directed, picked the drive to protect and the drive for storage, the same one I used before. All this did was create a second folder in Time Explorer Storage. I was still no closer to restoring anything.
So, since the Recover data from nonstop backup seemed a bust, I thought I would try the Files and Folders option to recover my daily backup. This went as expected, but after restoring all my files and opening my email, my emails stopped at the date of the complete image backup, which was 4 weeks earlier. Since I was able to view the contents of my .tib files I looked at my email folders. Even though 4 weeks had passed, there were virtually no files saved inside my thunderbird profile folder. Where there should have been multiple email data files, there was only only html filter file. The right folders were included in the backup, but the files weren't being archived as expected.
So now, with 4 weeks of email missing, I turned back to the Nonstop backup because I noticed that it was listed as a disk backup, while monkeying around with the other backup. I thought great, I'm saved, but that did not turn out to be the case.
I right-clicked the nonstop backup and selected recover, at which point a box popped up that said processing. After a 5-10 seconds I was given the option to choose to restore the disk or files and folders, I chose files and folders. I then chose the restore date and time, followed by a folder tree where I could select what to restore. Things were looking great at this point, I could even drill down to see individual files and dates. Everything I was looking for was there, and seemed to be intact. Finally, I chose a restore location and clicked on the Proceed button. Bam! What had been going so right, went wrong in 1 second flat.
Just when you expected it to start copying files to the restore location I receive an error message and the whole process stops cold. From clicking proceed to the error message takes less than a second, and there isn't even any noticeable disk activity preceeding the error. The relevant error message seems to be "Failed to process pair script:" followed by a long string of characters that changes with each attempt. One of my error logs is attached.
From my experience with build 6053, I had a hunch that TI just didn't like playing with my OS so I decided to try one last thing. In a last ditch effort I booted using build 6053's bootable media. This time, at least the nonstop backup was recognized, but the results were exactly the same as inside windows. Every step of the recover process seemed perfect until you actually tell it to start, at which point I had an error message in the blink of an eye.
I am now out of ideas. I seem to have an archive that contains the files I need, but I cannot recover them. I would prefer to use TI to extract them, but I would be willing to extract the files from the .data files directly if that is possible. I am only interested in a limited number of files, and I know where they are located so I would be okay if I could just open the files like I would a zip file. Any suggestions appreciated.
