Need Help Recovering System

Thread needs solution

I am running True Image 2013 and have never had to actually use it features. Fast forward 3 years . . . daughters laptop starts acting up. Performing Full Backup in True Image - backup has been validated. Then contacted laptop manufacturer. Laptop tech support ran through all sorts of troubleshooting assuming a software issue and in the process had me take the system to a much earlier state - wiping out MS Office and many other programs. Issue turned out to be bad motherboard and touch screen (all hardware). I would like to get system back to point of the full backup I made prior to calling hardware manufacturer. System boots into Windows 8.x and runs just fine. Question: What does "Recover" really do on the restore menu in True Image. Will it get the system back to per troubleshooting state using that most recent full backup? I do not wish to loose anything more. Is there a better approach to restoring to previous state (create an image and then boot and reinstall from DVD?
