Need help...first timer LOL

Thread needs solution

Okay, I think I might have done this all wrong...I skimmed through the manual on how to use Acronis True Image but I still think I might have missed something. I downloaded Acronis True Image, ran a back up (saved to my G: drive - external). Bought a new 500gb drive (though I really wanted to go for TB which they didn't have or the 600 which was the same price as the TB but they didn't have it in stock ) Anyway, you don't care about all that. So I ran my backup, bought a new drive, replaced the drive, looked for Acronis on my External Hard drive. The only thing i found were a few .tib files. The folder "my backups" was empty. Not sure how all this was suppose to work. So I then got my computer and new internal hard drive up and running and re-installed Acronis from the internet. Acronis was able to read these files, and seems to be attempting opening it. The files are number with date and then a number 03_10_201001, 03_10_201002, etc...up to 03_10_201011 - I am trying to run the very last one. I am not sure why there are several numbered files. I only figured running the last numbered file was the 'best bet.' I ran this file yesterday, it sat for a long while - I am guessing about 7 hours and states, "Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while..." I restarted this over again this morning because there seems to be no activity...no sound from computer and usually when my external hard drive light on the front usually moves back-and-forth but it's not.

Just incase:

Toshiba Satellite A135-S2266
OS: Windows Vista
RAM: 1.5 GB (added to this)
32 Bit
Intel ® Celeron ® M CPU 430 @ 1.73 GHz (from the "M" I'm clueless lol)

This was on my screen at first:
This is exactly what is on my monitor at this time...
Loading, Please wait...
acronis: insmod: error inserting '/lib/modules/acpiphp.ko': -1 No such device
: no such device
acronis: cannot open module 'st': no such file or directory
acronis: insmod: error insterting '/lib/modules/floppy.ko': -1 No such device
: no such device
no raid disks
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...

I tried a different way and not it's a blue screen with a red hour glass...it has been on this screen for almost 24 hours. I'm not sure if my external drive is doing anything because the blue light on my external drive usually moves - I think - and there are no 'sounds' coming from my computer - like it's doing something.

When I tried this different way it said something about deleting the files as they were transferred to the new drive...or something along those lines.

Thanks,
Kerri

Hi Kerri. We all have to start somewhere :) The TIB files are the backup. If you look at the names you will notice they are the date of the backup (03_10_2010) followed buy the file number (01, 2, Etc.)

It sounds like your external drive might be formatted FAT32 in which case the biggest file you can have is a little over 4GB so Acronis has to split the backup in to several 4GB files hence the 01, 02, 03. You can avoide this by reformatting your external drive with NTFS and your backup will just be one very large file (you can specify file sizes as a backup option).

Anyway the easiest way to do what you are trying to do is with the Acronis Bootable Media (ABM). It is a bootable CD you shouldhave had the option to create as part of the Acronis program. Boot the ABM and restore the TIB files on the external drive to the notebook. No need to install anything on the new notebook hard drive. It will restore WIndows and all.

Will it work? Read some of the posts :)

Kerri,
Click on my signature link below. It contains an index of helpful items. All are helpful but look at both items inside #7A and look at item 2 plus 7D and & 7H.

These are starting points.

Jim: I'm going to check out Grover's help above but I cannot reformat my external hard drive at this point...it's not new and it has pictures and documents on it. I did see where i could have slide the little 'box' for size of files but I thought I better not touch that since i didnt know what I was doing. My computer is still on a blue screen with the same hour glass and I just do not know whether to stop it or see what happens. Last two times I stopped it, the log had "terminated by user."

I did notice it was the date and then numerical order though.

I'm not sure what you mean by your last paragraph - I make a bootable CD on Acronis? My computer does open to windows if I restart it or if I cancel 'whatever' it is doing at this point. I don't have a problem booting the computer - I'm just totally lost if the program is doing anything right now or not. I will say that when I saw the 'sizes' listed under the recovery...they didnt make much sense and I wondered if that might be wrong and now that you say about changing the size, I'm really second-guessing it now. I will experiment with the bootable CD thing and see if that might help me understand.

Thank you!
