Need to recover $PATH variable from old backup

Hello,

Windows 7 64 bit, Acronis Home Backup 2010
I have a good working machine, with a good full backup....
I have recently installed an application which messed up my path variable. It set the $PATH to a value, instead of OLD_PATH; value.

Is there a way to recover what my path used to be set to, (ideally not involving recovering to my old system, getting the value, the recovering back to the current system. That is whole lot of work).

For example, can I boot from a Acrtonis backup file?
I assume the value is in the registry, but can I read that from a backup?

You would need to mount the SYSTEM hive file (located in \Windows\System32\config) and browse to the variables:

\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Environment

The path isn't expanded, but you shouldn't have a problem figuring it out.

For example, if you mounted your old TI partition image to drive Z:, you would start the Registry Editor, click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, select the File menu, then the Load Hive... option. Browse to Z:\Windows\System32\config and select the system file. Give it a name like OldWin7. The mounted hive will now show up in your registry. Select it and browse to \ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Environment. When finished, select OldWin7 and then Unload Hive... from the File menu.
