New Computer

Thread needs solution

Can I swap out my old Hard-drive for the new one? Will I have to do anything? If, not can I install my backup .tib file from my backup hard-drive, without doing anything if they are the same size?

Al, the simple answer is Yes, you can swap your hard drive for a new one, but you will need to do some things in order to get the new one to work in place of the old one.

One method of doing this is to Clone the old HDD to the new one.

See KB document: 56634: Acronis True Image 2016: Cloning Disks which will provide details of how this works, plus has a video tutorial.

The other method is to create a full disk & partitions backup (.tib) of the old HDD, then restore this fully to the new HDD or SSD.

You could do this from within Windows using the ATIH 2015 application if you connect the new HDD or SSD via USB to your computer, or you can create / use the Acronis bootable Rescue Media to do this.

The important point for either of the above methods is that you must install the new disk drive in place of the old one, i.e. in the same physical position and connected to the same cables / connectors in order to boot into Windows from it after you have cloned or restored the backup image.

The new drive should be of sufficient size to hold all the contents of your old HDD plus have free space left over.

Note: All the above assumes that this is being done of the same computer and does not involve more than one computer.
