New full backups don't overwrite old backups anymore

Thread needs solution

Hello, I've just updated True Image Home 2010 to its latest version, but now it's behaving strangely.

Whereas before the update, when a new image was created, the previous image of the drive was overwritten or deleted before the start of the new creation, now the opposite happens: when a new image starts, the old image isn't deleted until the new one is completed. So if the I drive is getting imaged, I have two files: I.tib (the old image) and I2.tib (the new one). At the end of the backup I.tib is deleted and I2.tib renamed, or at least it should work this way.

Trouble is, my external drives run out of disk space and no new image is created! I know this way is safer, but I use two external drives so I always have two backups of each of my internal drives. I don't need this feature which just keeps my backups from completing.

Is there an option to change or something to edit in the scripts? I am not using Acronis secure zone, by the way.

Sorry, I've seen there is another thread on the topic, but there's no definitive answer there. I have 1.5 Tb of data and 2x1Tb external drives, I can't afford to get bigger ones and I really need this to work as it was working before.

Is there no way to fix this besides using an older version?

Hi Cooper,

Hehe. I've been sticking with ATI 2009 since, at least for my computer's configuration, it has been working fine. Yet obviously the issue you describe is a bug. ATI2010 should be smart enough to pause and delete the older backup once ATI2010 realizes that the hard drive is out of space.

Hmm...Thinking of a workaround for your issue, the only thing which strikes me as a solid workaround is this:

Do you have a spare hard drive which you can install in your computer? If so, then you could back up to it, and then when the backup completes successfully, you could then delete your older backup from the removable external hard drive, and then copy the backup file(s) from the internal hard drive to your external hard drive. I do this regularly, but note that I configured ATI to break up the backup into 4GB sized files in order to assure that I don't exceed the file size limit for DVDs should I choose to burn the backup files to DVDs. Basically, I start the backup and then go to bed. Then in the morning (assuming that the backup was successful) I plug in my removable hard drive, delete the backup from the removable hard drive, and use explorer to copy the backup on my internal hard drive to the removable hard drive. Anyway, that is what works for me.

Thanks. It's a good idea, but I don't have a spare drive with so much space... It's not a bug, it's actually a new feature requested by many, but in my case it's just a nuisance. I guess I'll revert to the previous build, which was working perfectly after all. I'm an update maniac, this time I got burnt.

You could also consider using the TrueImage helper program titled "Chain2Gen" which is listed in my signature below; or item 3A and #3B inside my index.

This will work equally well in either version of TrueImage Home 2009 or 2010.

Ok, here's what happened. I tried rolling back my ATI2010 version to 6053 or something, it seemed to work but each time I tried to backup drive C the software or even the whole pc froze, specifically when trying to lock the drive. I thought something was wrong with the drive, checked it out but everything looked ok, so I tried reinstalling the latest version of ATI2010 and, lo and behold, no freezing.

So I guess there were some "leftovers" when I uninstalled the latest version and this created problems to the previous one.

Anyway, I managed to make this work as I'd like it to by creating batch files to delete the backup archives. When a backup starts, the appropriate batch file is called as a command to execute before the backup. This way, the old file is gone before the backup and the problem's fixed.

There's one thing I don't understand though: Acronis changed this feature because lots of people demanded it, but not everybody did. There must also be lots of people who liked the way things were working before. So why not give a chance to choose between the two behaviors? The more options the better, I say.

Hello,

GroverH, thanks for your help.

Cooper, thank you very much for your suggestion, I've forwarded it to the responsible department. Probably in the next version of Acronis True Image software you will be bale to overwrite backups again (like in the older builds).

Please reply to this thread if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.
