New hard drive for my notebook and bootable CD

Thread needs solution

Hi all;
I plan to upgrade to a new notebook hard drive. I plan to use the bootable CD and install the image of my old drive. Is there any preparation necessary for the new drive or can I just take it out of the box it was shipped in and install it in my VISTA OS Dell notebook?

No preparation is usually necessary. With a Dell though there are unique problems associated with Dells. You'll have to check the forum or wait untill someone else drops by who knows what they are. What version and build of True Image are you using? Some versions will automatically adjust the size of the original partition if the Image is going on a larger drive.

Thanks, Good to know that the new hard drive would be recognized straight out of the box. Sounds like a doable project. I am in the planning stage; my current hard drive is still functional. I was thinking of going to a larger capacity drive. If I go forward with the project I would probably consider Acronis True Image 2010. However, You have me thinking twice when mentioned "...problems associated with Dells."

Hello Clifford,

Thank you for using  Acronis True Image

Assuming that you have your new drive installed in the laptop, and the old one connected via USB, here is a sample cloning scenario with Acronis True Image Home 2010

Check the Sticky topic by GroverH. I don't know if you will find step by step, but at least it's a good start.

Hello all,

Michael, please check GroverH guides as DwnNDrty mentioned.

Additionally, please have a look at this KB article to get a detailed guide on how to clone laptop's hard drive.

Please reply to this thread if there will be any additional questions, I'll be glad to help.

Thank you.
