Newb question: Can you clone disk from the destination disk?

Thread needs solution

Hi, I'm clueless with PC'S tbh but my source disk hard drive isn't working properly, It gets passed the windows start up and the password screen, then freezes up.

So, Can i run Acronis on my 2nd pc, and the destination hard drive or do you have to run acronis on the hard drive of the hard drive you want to clone everything from?

To clone, you should boot the computer on the Acronis recovery CD or USB flash drive, and perform the clone operation from Acronis running from that medium.

Ideally, put your new disk on the same connector of your current source, put the source on some other connector.

What is really important is the following: after you have performed the clone, DO NOT reboot the computer with both disks (the source and the destination) in the computer at the same time. Disconned the source and boot the computer on the destination.

Cloning will create an exact copy of your source disk, so I am not sure why you think you need to clone to work around your current startup problem...

ty for the response, i'm told my current hd is on the fritz and i need a new one, so im hoping i can clone everything onto the new hd to avoid reinstalling all my programs. Idk if its correct though that its a hardware issue, and just replacing the hd and cloning will work?

David,
Backing up your data should be your first priority. Cloning a failing disk often leads to further problems or moving your issues from the old disk to new. While the new hardware might be good operationally, software corruption (or file system issues) will only be transferred to the new drive if cloned. Just want you to be aware of this. I'd back up my data before I started cloning (or trying to clone).
