No external USB drive after TIH upgrade 7133

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I upgraded TIH to version 7133. After upgrading my external USB drive shows up as RAW. I formatted the USB drive and copied files, but after disconnect and reconnect the disk shows again up as RAW. On another computer my drive is normally recognised so the drive was not at fault. It took me a while to relate this to the TIH upgrade. I did a system restore to before the TIH upgrade and my USB drive is normally recognised.
After that I did an other upgrade to TIH 7133, and I got the same problems, my external USB drive shows up as RAW again.
So this seems like a bug in the 7133 version?

Regards, Gijs

Jan,

Restore to the previous build, uninstall, use the clean up utility found here http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29767
Follow all instructions *very carefully*, in particular do not let the utility reboot your computer.
Reboot your computer and install the latest version

Hi,

First, I have a comparable PC, before the update to 7133 everything worked fine. I updated my second PC to 7133, and my external USB drive shows up as RAW, so exactly the same problem as my first PC. So I can duplicate the same problem on another PC. The partition information of an external USB drive is no longer recognized after updating to 7133.
On my second PC I removed ATIH according to the cleaning procedure described, in de registry I had to manually remove vidsfltr67.
On reboot my PC worked and my USB drive shows up as it should.
I am going to install 7133 again an come back later

regards and thanks for your help

Hi

I installed ATIH Home 2012 7133 and the problem is back. My external USB drive shows up as RAW. So ATIH 7133 prevents the reading of the partition information from my external USB drive.
Any help is appreciated

Hi,

I downloaded the snapapi_virtualdisk.zip, however I could not install the SNAPAPI, see my attached doc file with the error.

This other user has a similar problem. I have notified Acronis. You might want to consider recovering your computer to a point where the problem was not there. Once you have a know working state for your computer, try the beta version of 2013. Remember that beta versions can be tricky, so you will need to be comfortable with going back to that backup if needed.

Hi,

The other users disk was corrupt, mine is fine. It is just that after ATIH upgrade 7133 my disk is reported as RAW, when I go back to version 6151, my disk shows up normal (mind you I have to uninstall with the clean up utility)

regards

Hi,

I am a long time very satisfied user of ATIH, and I want to go on using this excellent product, so I spend some considerable time in nailing down this problem.

I uninstalled everything with the ATIH_CleanUp_2012 and manually removing vidsflt* etc from the registry. Then everything is working fine

Then I used the VirtualdiskSetup.MSI which you pointed me to in the previous post.
So I only used the VirtualdiskSetup.MSI and did NOT install ATIH.
The problem recurs and my external USB hard drive shows up as RAW, again there is nothing wrong with my hard drive, when I plug it in to another computer it shows up fine.

So my conclusion is that the problem lies in the VirtualDisk, which prevents the reading of the partition information of my external USB hard drive.

Some other observations:
on my computer which has a previous version of ATIH 2012 6133, everything is working fine, in the registry it has in lower filters: vidsfltr61.
The newest build has vidsfltr67, this is NOT working. The one you pointed me to has vidsfltr63 and is also NOT working. So the last version which is working seems vidsfltr61. Perhaps this is related to my problem.

When removing VirtualdiskSetup via windows uninstall, simple uninstalling does not work! I have to use the ATIH_CleanUp_2012 utility and manually edit the registry to remove vidsflt*

Furthermore USB memory sticks even formatted as NTFS are working fine, so the problem lies only in my external USB HDD

I hope that this can be sorted out

Jan,

That was a gread idea to do this investigation. I am impressed!

Hopefully Acronis will actually peruse this thread as I requested their help here.

Hello Jan,

Thank you for using Acronis software and posting your issue in this forum.

The reported problem may have several causes:

  • Please review the external hard drive with chkdsk /r /f to make sure that each partition have no errors.
  • If the external hard drive is also a NTFS file system? If not, I would recommend this to convert the file system.

If these steps do not lead to success, I would need for a further analysis of your system the following data:

  • A system report on your operating system.
  • Screenshots from the Windows Explorer, which displays the connected external hard drive content.
  • A screenshot of Windows Disk Management (Go to Start -> Run -> diskmgmt.msc) in the overview.

Once you have gathered this information, please contact me via private message. I will pass the data to our developers.

Please understand that we can not guarantee that we will find a solution to the problem.

Please let me know if I can do anything for you.

Thank You

Hi Peter,

I ran a chkdsk /f /r again and no errors. The drive was already formatted as NTFS.
I will send you the requested files via PM .
I am also in the process of trying the Beta, I will report in the Beta forum,
Thanks for your help

Jan
Be sure you download and install the latest copy of the 2013 beta, it is now at build 3084. There were some issues with Acronis drivers not being updated correctly if 2012 had been installed and the vidsfltrXX driver was still in place. See this post: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/33220. I would like to know how 2013 does on your system, as it looks like Acronis has changed the drivers for the 2013 betas as compared to the 2012 version

Hi,

I did a clean install of the Beta (I checked there was no vidsfltr driver installed), I will post my report in the Beta forum in a few moments.
I will also download the new Beta and test this Wednesday
