No progress during file backup by true image home 2012 after more than 2 hours
Hallo,
I made a file backup of my folder C:\Users\Username and C:\Users\Public with the newest build 6131 of acronis true image home 2012. But still after more than 2 hours no progress is seen in the progress line. The TrueImageMonitor also say 0% finished, but there is a disk activity an the backup file on disk and the file is increasing in size and has reached 10% of allover estimated backup size. Backup destination is an iSCSI drive on my network storage (NAS).
Why isn't it possible, that Acronis makes a faultless software? Some days ago with another problem with TI 2012 (crash during selection of destination folder), Acronis support did update the Snap API drivers by remote session on my computer. The crash problem was away, but now I have the next problem.
I have first some days before installed my windows 7 home premium (64 bit) and all applications recent. There are no other problems with the installation. The AcronisSystemReport was allready checked by support and was considered as "without problems".
This is the second backup I try with TI on the new installation and it don't work correct. Before this backup a made a full disk backup, but I canceled this. During this backup I had a progress in progress bar, with the second backup not, still after more than 2 hours (it is still running).
Could anybody explain this error or help me to go on?
Helmut F.

Hallo Razz Putin, thank you for your comment. I'm not alone with this issue. Try to chat with acronis support?! But what if the 30-day limit for free of charge support is over. If it is a bug, acronis refunds the money for a pay per indicent.

Helmut and Razz Putin,
Have you tried making a disk or partition image?
Have you tried a file backup of another folder one that doesn't contain email backups?
If trying the above two items doesn't get any results, try a repair install of 2012.

I uninstalled ATI 2012 and re installed it. Now I just completed a successful back up.

I canceled the backup task, finished TI, restarted the computer and also the network storage (NAS) and started again the file backup of my folder C:\Users\Username and C:\Users\Public (in summary about 350 GByte) at 11 pm and went to bed. In the morning, 8 hours later I had a progress of 32% and a remaining duration of 15 hours and 46 minutes. Backup to an iSCSI over 1 GBit Ethernet is not very fast - 10 MByte/second. But it seams that TI works, the backup file meanwhile increases to 216 GB (232.293.138.432 Bytes).

I also checked my network components: PC hat 1GBit/s Ethernet, router has 1 GBit/s Ethernet, NAS has 1 GBit/s Ethernet, but one switch in the network has only 10/100 MBit/s, so this is the cause why backup over network to the iSCIS in storage center needs so much time.

Helmut,
As far as the NAS is concerned, try accessing it via either UNC or IP, you may need to enter fully qualified credentials (that is, PC_name\User) to get the task to work (as you are accessing the drive this might not be necessary). Unmapping the drive may also help. Because of the way Acronsi imaging programs work they expect to access networks via UNC or IP, mapping can cause problems.
If you have WireShark, see if your NAS is dropping packets and requiring resends as this would slow the transfer speed substantially.

Colin B,
thank you for your comment. Accessing the NAS via UNC or IP is not the problem. I have for each distributed folder a network drive on windows, to which I can store acronis backups (but I didn't test this yet with great backup images). But I have integrated an iSCSI LUN hard drive in to windows with iSCSI Initiator. So I have a drive with letter N:, which is like an internal pc hard drive, but the real storage is on the NAS. Im not shure, if you know about this possiblity. The long time acronis TI needs to store the backup is first the amount of data (350 GB), second the throughput of the iSCSI (10 MB/sec) and third the non total 1 GBit/s Ethernet. I have the possibility to connect the NAS directly to the 1GBit/s switch of the router (after finishing the momentary running backup); now the NAS is only connectet to a slower ethernet switch with 10/100 MBit/s transfer rate. This is factor 10!! slower, so time to create backup is 10 multiplied longer as with 1 GBit/s Ethernet. If I have to backup 350GB and an throughput of 10MB/sec on the iSCSI drive, the calculated time for backup is 350 * 1024 / 10 sec = 35840 sec = 9,96 hours. This is the theoretical value, the practical is larger.
Meanwhile my backup to the iSCSI drive is finished and I could change to NAS network cable to the 1 GBit/s router switch. With windows task manager - tab network - I now have a higher network use of 10 .. 22 %, formerly 6 .. 9 %. I just make a validation of the backup archive. Will inform here, how long this last if validation is finished. The backup archive size has 331 GB (356.023.348.224 Bytes). The current remaining time after one hour after begin of validation is 19 h 55 m (shown by acronis true image progress bar) and 3% shown by task bar icon.

Backup validation of my 331GB backup archiv stored on my iSCSI drive has finished. Start time was 11:53 pm, end time 5:13 am, which were about 5 hour and 20 min. Perhaps someone are interested in the average throughput: 17,66 MB/sec. This is about the two times increased value like before, where the NAS was connected to a 10/100Mbit switch. Connecting the NAS to the 1 GBit/s port of the router switch results in a two time increase network throughput and so also in a two times increased hard disk throughput. So it is not the factor 10, but 2.
