No Restore Option with Boot Disk

Thread needs solution

To test my backups, I used my Acronis boot disk to restore an image to an external USB hard drive.  The computer I was testing on had no option in the bios to boot from the USB drive so I tried to boot from the USB drive on my laptop.  When the laptop tried to boot the USB drive I received an MBR error, which was no surprise.

Now I want to repeat the process on the original computer with the option to NOT recover the MBR.  When I boot from the Acronis boot disk and select restore, the program finds my backups but when I select it there is no option to restore the backup. I can move around in the program and even validate the backup but not restore it. I'm thinking the USB drive may need to be formatted and I'm doing that now.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Edit:  Formatting the USB drive worked - but why?  Why wouldn't True Image just format the USB drive?  Is this a safety feature or bug?

Okay - so I restored the image a second time with the option to not recover the MBR and I still get the "MBR Error".

I must be missing something. Any ideas?

Yeah, I guess you need USB drivers which you don't have until you boot?????

My goal is to test my backups. Is there anything I can do besides verify the backup image with the ATI boot disk?

Thanks

If you cannot open the usb enclosure to remove the drive, you can probably pick up a used internal drive - it doesn't have to be the same capacity as the one the Backup was made from, just large enough to hold the used space.
Or if your system has an eSata port, you can boot a drive connected to the eSata port. I have done this.

I'll look around for an extra drive to connect inside the computer.

Thanks for the info.
