ntoskrnl.exe when Activating Startup Manager

Thread needs solution

Hi,

I am having trouble with the Acronis TI Home 2010 Startup Manager (Build 6053).

The system is running Windows XP and has 2 partitions (C: System and D: Data). There is also a Secure Zone Partition which holds images of C:

If the Startup Manager (F11) is not activated, everything works fine. If I activate it from within Windows or from the Rescue Media CD, upon reboot, it gives the error that ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt and Windows won't boot.

If I then remove startup manager, Windows boots fine.

As per a forum topic, I tried reinstalling ntoskrnl.exe from the Recovery Console (XP Boot CD), but still no luck.

An interesting thing I noticed is if I use the Rescue Media and instead of choosing Acronis, I choose "Start Windows", I get the same ntoskrnl.exe error (even if the Startup Manager is NOT activated).

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Anyone from Acronis there to help with this issue? I cannot find a support link on the website....

Guess not...

Thanks Acronis for leaving your customers to fend for themselves.

This will be the last time I buy your products.

Hello,

Sorry for the delayed response, we have a huge delay in our queues, so I was not able to handle this thread in faster manner, I apologize.

It's obvious that this error has caused by our product, and let me list some particular issues:

  1. Miscellaneous corruption
  2. Corrupt boot.ini file.
  3. Missing boot.ini file.
  4. Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file.
  5. Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows.

1. Before trying any of the below recommendations it's recommend that you attempt to load the last known good configuration. Additional information about doing this can be found below:

- When your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8.
On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press F8 when the boot menu appears.

- Use the arrow keys to highlight the Last Known Boot Configuration with Networking option, and then press ENTER.

2. This issue is often caused when the boot.ini is missing or improperly configured. This issue often arises after a user has recently added or removed an operating system on the computer or added or removed hard disk drives in the computer.

Make sure the line pointing to the operating system and its drive and partition is properly configured in the [boot loader] and [operating systems] section.

3. If the boot.ini is severely corrupted or missing a user running Microsoft Windows XP can rebuild the boot.ini to resolve this issue. Additional information about rebuilding the boot.ini can be found below (instructions can be applied for XP systems only):

  • Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD into the computer. Note: If you have a system recovery CD or restore CD (not a Microsoft CD) these steps will likely not work for your computer.
  • Reboot the computer with the CD and press any key when prompted to press any key to boot from the CD.
  • Once in the Microsoft Setup menu press R to open the recovery console.
  • Select the operating system you wish to use; if you only have Windows XP on the computer you will only have one prompt.
  • Once prompted for the password enter the Admin password and press enter.
  • Once at the command prompt type bootcfg /rebuild to start the rebuild process.
  • The rebuild process will step you through a number of steps depending upon how many operating systems you have on the computer and how the computer is setup. Below is a listing of the common steps you are likely going to encounter.

    * Prompt for the identified versions of Windows installed. When you receive this prompt press Y if the bootcfg command properly identified each of the Windows operating systems installed on the computer. It is important to realize this command will only detect Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows NT installations.

    * Prompt to enter the load identifier. This is the name of the operating system for the boot.ini. For example, Microsoft Windows XP Home users would enter Microsoft Windows XP Home edition.

    * Prompt to Enter OS load options. When this prompt is received type /fastdetect to automatically detect the available options.

  • Once you have completed all the available options in the rebuild and are back at the prompt type exit to reboot the computer.

4. If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can also generate the error. To restore this file follow the below steps.

  • Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
  • Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
  • In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
  • Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
  • Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
  • You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
  • Type exit to reboot the computer.

5. Attempt to check the hard disk drive for any errors by running the chkdsk program. To do this follow the below steps.

  • Once at the recovery console type chkdsk /r
  • Once completed type exit and see if issue is resolved.

As the last solution, I would recommend you to perform Repair installation of Windows XP. The detailed description of this process is described in this article.
