OK if Number of Versions and Backup Size Are Greater than Actual?

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have two identical external drives with a "backup" directory at the root. This is the target directory for my backups. My intention is to alternate between these two external drives every few days. The active one is attached to my router, and I use the router's static LAN IP address in the path to the backup destination, so the destination location does not change when I swap drives.

I created an incremental backup task and kept an eye on it for 10 days. Everything worked fine. TI reported 10 versions, and there actually where 10 versions.

I then swapped in the second drive (which has an empty "backup" directory") and put the first drive in a secure off-site location. TI created a full backup and then proceeded with incrementals as expected.

So, my backups are still continuing to work, but TI is reporting more versions than actually exist, and it is reporting a much larger backup size than is correct.

I didn't notice these things right away, but I think it may have picked up at version 11 since the last version created with the first disk was 10.

Is this bug harmless, or will it prevent me from doing a restore if I need to?

From forum browsing, I know I could just re-create the task every time I swap my drives, but I'd rather not have to. That is the basis for my asking whether or not the bug really matters.

Thanks,
Dave

Hello dtheese,

the situation that you describe can be named a designed behaviour.

We don't recommend changing of the backup destination within one task, since the program gets confused.

Acronis True Image 2014 stores information on the backups in a metadata information database. Swapping disks you physically remove backup files (backups on unattached disk are not available for the program) but it doesn't change information in the database.

For such use case we've added a special option in our enterprise backup solution. Since you use Acronis True Image 2014 I would advise you to create two backup plans, one for each media.

Thank you.
