Old computer crashed, now have new computer
My old computer crashed for whatever reason. Bought a new computer. Installed the old drives in the new computer without the new drive. Would not boot. Windows loading screen comes up, but I suspect the drivers are different than what is on the old hard drive.
Installed the new hard drive, and the new windows came up, activated and works fine. Installed the old hard drive and I can access all the data on it but do not want to reinstall all the programs to the new drive.
I had been cloning my main drive every 2 days so I also have a second drive that is good.
How do I copy everything either to the new drive that has the newest drivers for the new motherboard and video card or how do I get the old drive to boot?
I am using a registered copy of Acronis Home 2011. Of course it is on the old drive that will not boot.
thanks

Pat L wrote:<Option C: long. You move only the content from the old computer to the new one. You have to reinstall the programs. This is the preferred route, frankly.
I've searched this forum for help and found this answer but I am having trouble doing it.
Old computer crashed and I got a new one. I know I have to reinstall programs but everything I need to do that is on the external harddrive. I'd had Acronis on my old one doing weekly backups. I purchased and installed ATIH 2012 on the new computer but have so far been unable to figure out how to see the data files on the external harddrive that I want to copy to the new computer.

In fact, I saw this before I posted my question. I hope I don't sound too silly, but what had me confused was the part that said to NOT choose a folder but to choose a specific file. I actually want to copy a LOT of folders back to the new computer. Can I do that with those instructions?

To me, one of the easiest methods is to use the MOUNT option as specified in the pdf I referenced.
This is a summary. The pdf has more details.
1. Use the Mount option and specify the backup which has your files. TI Mount will advise the drive letter assigned to the virtual drive. Maybe the drive letter will be x:
2. Open Windows Explorer and click on the virtual drive letter (drive X) where your backup files are stored. Browse to specific folders you want to copy.
3. Make the Windows size of the explorer to be half size vertically.
4. Now open a new Explorer window and open the drive letter assigned to where you want the files to be copied to--such as Drive C.
5. Change the size of the window to half size vertically. The result of the window size should enable you to have both the source window (x) and the target window (C) open so you can see both drives.
6. Now highlight the folders in X and use your mouse pointer and drag from x to C as copies. You can drag multiple folders in one drag although keep it simple to avoid issues.
7. after the copies completed, you should unmount drive X either from the TI Tools menu or by right clicking on drive x from within Windows explorer and choose unmount.
Special note:
If Acronis is unable to mount your backup, you mgiht also try an attempted mount in read/write mode; or even to disable your AntiVirus program--if you have such an option.

Well, I ended up trying to use the "one file" method but just copied the entire C drive from the backup harddrive to a folder I created on the new computer and it looks like that worked. I got all the data files and can access my user folder with all of my stuff. Now I just have to start reinstalling my programs.
Thanks for the help!
