Online backups are corrupted and will not recover
I have just added the online option to TI2010 and run an intial backup of some files. TI reported the task complete with no error messages. On checking via the web interface the files do indeed appear to have been backed up. To my horror though, when I have tried to recover some of the files the downloaded zip is empty. I have also tried to recover the same files using the TI interface and the error message is "failed to recover item - read error or data content corrupted". In fact, on further checking the vast majority of the files appear to be corrupted.
This is totally unacceptable. I clearly cannot rely on Acronis Online service to provide reliable backup solution. The issue needs urgent investigation. I would also be grateful if you could issue a refund for my annual subscription as there is no way I would use the service as it is at present.

Update: I am not sure how often this forums are monitored so I have also created a support request via the main website.

Hello Karl,
First of all, please accept our profound apologies for the difficulties you've experienced.
Since you've opened a support case, there's no need to start the investigation on the forum. Anyway, please feel free to reply to this thread if you have any questions.
Thank you.

For the information of other users who may also be experiencing a similar issue, Acronis Support has not yet solved the issue or even apparantly identified why the error has occured. At present the approach to solving my issue appears to be responding to each of my replies with a request for further information often bearing apparantly no relavance to my issue. Hopefully something will be sorted soon.

Update: Unfortunately no solution has been found for this error. The suggested solution was quite simply unbelievable:
"......I request you to upload a small size of data every time rather than uploading large number of files and folders."
OK. So it seems Acronis Online can only cope with "a small size of data" whatever that means. And the only way to know if your data is retrievable is to check it yourself (every single file)- the lacks of any error messages is certainly no reassurance.
Unsurprisingly I have asked for a refund.
I would suggest anyone using the online backup service urgently checks that their data is retrievable.

Karl,
How much data were you uploading at any one time. Also, what files were they?

The archive appeared to become corrupted during an upload of about 13GB of data, mainly JPEG image files.
A second line engineer looked the my system via remote access but was not able to identify the cause of the issue. My concern remains that the software reports the backup was complete despite the fact the archive was clearly corrupt. The only solution suggested was not delete the whole archive and start again. The engineer also indicated that there is currently no form of data verification but that he would suggest this to the developers.
I should add that more recent files added seem to be fine, although just at the minute something seems to be wrong with the online server as I can't access it either via TIH or the web portal.

Hi Karl.
I currently have a call open with acronis although the difference is with mine it has generated errors during the upload process. I have submitted some tracert and telnet tests although I have the same concern as you - the integrity of the files when no errors have been generated.

WOW sure wish I had come in here and read some of this before even attempting to use the online back up. Tech support seems to be clueless. I havn't been able to complete a back up yet. Actuly I'm very suprised TH local back up seem to work flawlessley. I actualy had to use a full back up on one of my notebooks. It did a full reload flawlessly brought me back about 3 weeks with it.
I think now that it will be pointless to contiue wasting anymore valuable time trying to get the BETA software to work.

hi,
technical support came back saying there were no problems with the files i had uploaded; the last log written stated completed (although there were errors with just hex in the middle of the logs).
one thing to bare in mind with online backup's is the medium being used. the more data being backed up, the longer it will take and the more chance of errors in the data transfer - this is true whatever product you use.
There are two things i hope acronis add to their product:
integrity check. to compare the local and remote data after transfer.
more detailed logs. the logs generated by t.i.h and the standalone application dont provide the user with much of an idea what may have gone wrong compared to say, backup exec.

There should NOT be "errors" in the data stream. The TCP/IP protocol has built-in error checking. If Acronis is using UDP/IP, then that is an different matter, but one can only assume that they are using TCP/IP. Wireshark would show for sure, but I do not have the time to do a capture.

hello,
the answer from acronis was to upload smaller amounts of data in more intervals.
