Optimal Configuration of Backups (I'm running out of disk space when I shouldn't be)

Thread needs solution

Hello!

I am using True Image 2013 Build 6514 and I'm trying to figure out the optimal way to configure the automatic backups. The problem is that I keep running out of disk space when I really shouldn't.

This is probably a very simple question; however, it has me stumped.

Here's what I have:

System Drive: Samsung 830 Series 256GB MLC Internal Solid State Drive
Secondary Drive: Western Digital Black 2TB 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

They are both backed up to:

Backup Drive: Western Digital Green 3TB 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Note that the secondary drive currently has less than a terabyte of data actually stored on it at the moment. I've tried virtually every combination of settings that I can think of to keep the drive from running out of space, but to no avail.

I'm sure I'm missing the obvious, but what would the people on this forum suggest as optimal?

If you need any additional information from me I'll be happy to provide!

Many thanks! Matt

Please describe the settings or post a picture of your backup scheme which is running out of space.

is the 3TB storage disk one large partition or what?

These are some possibilities--depending upon the type of backups you wish to create.

GH11. Create Custom Full Backup Scheme.Keep 4 versions (chains).
GH12. Create Custom Incremental Backup Scheme. 6 Inc, Keep 4 chains.
GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme. 2 Diff, Keep 2 chains.
GH14. Custom Differential Backup Scheme . 6 Diff, Keep 4 chains. & folder

These example use automatic cleanup or automatic deletiion of old backups once the "Store no more than X recent version chains" threshold is reached. Do not use the elapsed days or specific disk space options.

The key to success here is to set the task up initially with the correct settings and then leave it alone without any further changes in configurations. If configuration changes needed, or a restore is made, stop using the old task and start with another new task. Each task has it own folder and no mixing of backup files from other tasks.

If manual deletions should be needed, (none would be normally needed as the program does the deletion automatically), all deletions must be done from within the program.

Added: Keep in mind that the program will not delete the old full or chain until after a replacment has been created. This means there is temporary need for this additional large file and this can cause unexpected space needs. If this is a factor here, you may need to do some special batch file deletion before the replacment full is created. This can ge discussed in more detail if this is an issue here.
