Outlook Express 6 - sub-folders missing from backup

Thread needs solution

I am using TIH 2012 with Plus Pack, Update 2, Build 7119.

When I do E-mail backup of Outlook Express 6 (to an external drive), none of the local SUB-FOLDERS are being backed up, however the local FOLDERS are, it's the SUB-FOLDERS that are not being included in the backup. Here is what I mean: in Outlook Express I have:

Local Folder A
Sub-folder A-1
Sub-folder A-2
Sub-folder A-3

Local Folder B
Sub-folder B-1
Sub-folder B-2

Etc.

Local Folders A and B are being included in the backup, but without their Sub-folders.

How do I fix this?

I suppose you are using the email backup feature. When you set it up, do the local folders and subfolders appear somewhere for you to select?

Pat, thanks for responding. Yes, I use the E-mail Backup feature. In the Source column the following tree then appears:

My e-mail

   Microsoft Outlook Express

      Profiles

         George

            Message Store Root

               Local Folders

A list of all the local folders (in no particular order), but without the sub-folders.

If I try to expand any local folder that I know has sub-folders, I get:

"Runtime Error

Program: C:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TrueImage.exe

Abnormal program termination".   TIH then closes.

I should mention that in Outlook Express, all the local folders with their sub-folders are viewable and accessible.

Any light you can shed on this problem will be appreciated!

When you click on local folders, ATI asks you to enter your credentials (see the link at the top of the selection dialog box that says "specify credentials for this location"). This should be the username and password of the Windows user that own this OE profile.
Can you enter the credentials?
Does this solve your problem?

What username/password do you use to log on to Windows when you start the laptop?

OK. Autologon is effectively a feature of Windows, but you still have a username and password.
Go to the control panel and look for user management. Find out what is your username. If you have several users there and you cannot determine which user you are, use Windows explorer to open the C:\ partition/disk and open Document and Settings and find your folders there. The name of top folder under Documents and Settings is your username.
In control panel, choose to modify your user account. If it shows you the option to add a password, then you don't have one. If it shows the options to change your password, than you have a stored password. If you have a password and don't know it, you have a problem. You can find tools on the Internet to remove your Windows password for XP (scary no?).
If you don't have a password, simply enter the username in the ATI credentials and leave the password blank. See if that solves your issue. If the problem subsists, add a password to the account and try again.

OK, let me dig into the matter of the username /password, and I'll report back. Thanks for sticking with me on this!

Found my username in Control Panel/User Accounts, didn't have a password. Entered the username in ATI credentials, left password blank. Ran e-mail backup again, still no joy, all the local dbx folders are in the backup as before but without sub-folders.

Then went back to create password for my username in ContPanel/User Accounts, rebooted for good measure. Went back to ATI to run e-mail backup again, entered both username and password in credentials, same results, no sub-folders included in the list of backed up dbx folders.

If you have any other ideas or suggestions, they will be welcome!

I was hoping that the lack of credentials would prevent ATI from "seeing" into the local folders, but no luck.

The last thing I would try is to uninstall, create a clean-boot environment by using msconfig (disable all non-Microsoft services and all startup items) reboot, reinstall, recreate the task with the proper credentials. If that fails, I am running out of ideas.

I'll keep the ATI uninstall and re-install after a clean boot as an option, because in the meantime I have found a workaround, which is using the "File Backup" feature and drilling down to the message store folder where all the dbx files (both parent and child) are stored. This picked up all the child folders (sub-folders) without any problem.

I did have some concern whether upon restoring to another machine, the sub-folders would end up in Outlook Express just like any other dbx folder (since the message store shows parent and child folders as a single list without regard to parent/child relationship). I was pleasantly surprised that when I restored to the other machine, Outlook Express had each sub-folder underneath its respective parent folder.

So it's been quite a learning experience. I think Acronis should pay us for being their guinea pigs, but that's another story! I really appreciate the time you spent on this with me.

You are welcome. I notified Acronis about your problem. It might be a bug in the software.
Note that if you do a disk and partition backup of your system, and you have the local folders in a location that is included in the backup, you won't gain much with additional email backup. The outlook express mail folders are relatively small in size, when compared to the bulky PST files from Outlook. So using a file backup is a pretty good option (not like Outlook's case).

Hello George,

Thank you for your posts.

According to your Acronis Support Case, the issue is resolved.

The problem was caused by not entering Windows username and password in the credentials box.

If there is anything else, we can do for you, please let me know.

Thank you.
