Plus Pack migration to new machine - driver problem

Thread needs solution

1. Have good backup on external drive...
2. Have loaded it to new machine and encountered the following problems...
a. After Restore Acronis asks for drivers...
b. It didn't find them so I skipped all requests for drivers...
c. Do the driver have to be on the floppy disk... and if so why isn't the A: drive listed in the setup menus...?
3. I am in the process of getting drivers from appropriate sources...
4. The system obviously won't boot without the drivers...but...
5. It takes a couple of hours to load the drive from Acronis backup/restore to get to the point where Acronis requests drivers...

Questions:
6. Is there a way to load the drivers without going through a complete Restore...?
7. How do you designate the floppy as the source for Drivers when using plus pack...?

Thanks in Advance...
Ed

Ed,

You will have to do the entire restore again and have the drivers available for the program to install them after the restore completes (the Universal Restore portion is started after the image is restored).

I normally put the drivers needed for the new system (32 bit or 64 bit based on the restored target OS and target hardware) in a folder called drivers on the same drive as the backup images are located. Tell Universal Restore to look in this folder during restore. Be sure that you have extracted the drivers from any zip or exe file that they may be distributed in. (You should have .sys, .inf, ,etc. files)

The most critical drivers needed are the hard disk controller and chipset drivers.

You may still need to run Startup Repair from your OS install media after restoring to get the system to boot properly. Additional missing drivers can be added after booting up into the OS.

James...

It never hurts to ask... :-)
Kind of what I thought...
What's interesting is when I pointed to the directory with the drivers in it Acronis said no files to list...
this was true of any driver directory i choose... but I know they are there, I just loaded them...
if this doesn't work then I've got them each loaded onto a floppy and will try that...
any other suggestions...

Thanks again
Ed

James...

How do you point to the appropriate directory for a specific driver...?
Plus Pack at startup lets you specific a specific disk/directory...
However, my screen simply have four possibilities at the end of recovers...
they are... RETRY IGNORE IGNORE ALL CANCEL...

What am I missing...
Thanks
Ed

How about saving the log, and attaching it here for review.

James...

Sorry it took so long for me to respond... with machine crash and associated recovery time...

To recap: Using Plus Pack and moving to another hardware configuration...

1. The initial setup menus do not list the A: drive or the ability to designate it as the place for the DRIVERS... although later in the process it will sometimes look to A: and find the DRIVERS there... don't know why...

2. I ultimately followed your advice and put the DRIVERS on the Acronis Boot disk...

3. I pointed to the appropriate directory when asked... however (even though it later worked) at the initial load the program did not list any files in the specified directory... I had to trust they were there because I put them there...

4. After two hours of loading... the next BUMP... I would think there should be a method to avoid the complete reload... ACRONIS should have a way to boot and pick up where you left off...

5. At the point Plus Pack started looking for DRIVERS I began to get messages... which only gave the options to RETRY IGNORE IGNORE ALL CANCEL... see attached images...

6. There was no method of pointing the system at another target directory for DRIVERS...

7. Attached you will find the log for that particular load - last Friday the 10th... That log has four stops... each stop corresponds to the attachments below...

8. If you need more, let me know...

9. Plus Pack needs a lot of improvement... it works >> sometimes << but not without a lot of finessing of the DRIVERS...

10. I had to do the complete load at least 5 times before it all worked out and even then it was not straight forward...

I look forward to your input...

Ed

My suggestion was to put the drivers on the same disk as the backup files (.tib) in their own folder, not the boot disk.

"I ultimately followed your advice and put the DRIVERS on the Acronis Boot disk."

The only one of the errors that you need to be concerned with is the VEN_1095&DEV_3112. All of the 8086&DEV24 drivers are for USB controllers and are not necessary for boot.

The VEN_1095&DEV_3112 is a Silicon Image Sil 3112 SATA/RAID controller used by many systems (OEMs such as Adaptec and Intel use this chip set).

You would need to find the XP drivers for your controller from the manufacturers website. If you need help, post your motherboard/system specs here and I'll be glad to help you find them.

The files you need are as follows:

SI3112.inf
SI3112.mpd
SI3112.sys
SI3112r.inf
SI3112r.sys
SiiSupp.vxd
SilSupp.cpl
TxtSetup.oem

A couple of these may not be needed, but you should have all of them in a folder that you point AUR to.

Here is a link to some from Intel, but they may not be correct for your system: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=899&DwnldID…

It never would have occurred to me to put the files in the "backup files" directory...
Strange there are no instructions to that effect...

I wonder if the files can be placed in "sub-directories" within the "backup files" directory...
If so you could load all drivers for the new hardware in one directory call DRIVERS with multiple sub-directories for each hardware component...
I use WinZIP Drivers Updater and it produces a Backup file which can be used later for Restore of all the drivers on the system...
That would work nicely if it would recognize a directory/sub-directory structure for its search...

Thanks for all the information, I have goten the system up and running...
Then had to visit multiple suppliers to get the correct DRIVERS...

Is there any way to get suggestions to ACRONIS Software people...
It certainly seems there could be a smoother way to accomplish the task the Plus Pack was designed for...

Thanks again...
Ed

Glad to here you got your system up and running.

My suggestion is as follows:

Place the drivers in a SEPARATE folder named DRIVERS on the same disk as the backup files are located on (per my previous messages).

The UAR does indeed scan the folder pointed to and all of its sub folders. So yes you can create a DRIVERS folder with sub folders for each needed driver.
