"Previous Versions" of folders not present in the disk image back-up

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I just used Acronis True Image 2015 to backup a disk that I was concerned about, before attempting some repairs. The disk was virus infected with ransomware and was also nearly full. After I safely had a "full" disk back-up I proceeded to do the work on the disk.

A virus had encrypted all the important files on the disk. I looked at the Properties of each folder and found that the oldest Shadow Copy out of three contained health versions of all the files. The other two "Previous Versions" were encrypted. I immediately started the copying the files from the good "Previous Version", but about a quarter of the way into the copying it failed and the error suggested that files were missing. Sure enough the good "previous version" was gone. The disk was nearly full so Windows had decided to delete the oldest Shadow Copy to free up space.

Never mind, I thought! I have a full disk image back! So I restored the image to larger hard drive, thinking that this would prevent the problem from repeating. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered the there were no Previous Versions or System Restore points on the restored drive. Why not?

Why can't Acronis make a proper full disk image, that contains everything including the shadow copies?

Follow up question: If I had used the option "Backup sector-by-sector", would this have preserved the "Previous Versions" of folders?
